Essentially a coffee table-type book, this collection of over 400 full-color photographs of Fire Island--now more properly called Robert Moses State Park--entice the reader (i.e., viewer) to visit this sandspit on the southern coast of Long Island for fun and frolic. An oasis of freedom from the noise and congestion of New York, Fire Island is accessible only by boat and two bridges. Drawing on the archives of the Fire Island National Seashore, Richards, a former New Yorker and here more a compiler of photographs than an author of text, provides a short historical perspective. Part 1 consists of two-to-three-page glimpses of the communities on the island, while Part 2 gives short vignettes of the sports, beaches, flora, fauna, gardens, Sunken Forest, sea life, and so on, found there--even the Miss Fire Island drag queen contest in the Cherry Grove section. Recommended for regional collections.
