This is classic period Rick James. I think it's one of his best. But I refuse to spend this much money ($18 plus dollars?) on a bare bones cd with no extra tracks (except 1 bogus extended version). There is only seven original songs on here, I mean come on people, why screw the fans like this. Brand new releases don't cost this much, and this is well over 30 years old. This should be like $6.99 to 9.99 at the most, please!

fire it up was a strong blast of the funk from da Kang of the Modern Funk Rick James. He always brought it loud, bold and strong. the title track got you hyped up. come into my life was a strong punch of the funk as was Love Gun. Prime time grooves and slamming arrangements on this album. the horns and the pocket Grooves were always punchy and never let up. RIP to a Brother who truly made you feel what he was saying and he did things his own way.

Rick has been gone for several years now and, thankfully Hip-O select has been kind enough to reissue this and the long saught after Garden of Love (Reis) on CD,at least for a limited time anyway. This particular album was important for Rick for a number of reasons. For one it was his third album and really found him more firmly establishing the production flavors of his "punk funk" as it would be during his peak period in the 80's. At the same time the album cover established his image of that era in much the same way. In terms of Rick James this album was pretty futurist in a lot of ways but at the time he was a busy man. He was not only producing a new pet project in with Teena Marie with her Wild and Peaceful album but would also embark on a tour for this album, doubling up with a then somewhat unknown Prince as the opening act. In the meantime Rick's music was taking on a different perspective. The same kinds of ideas that were being touched upon on Come Get It! and Bustin' Out of L Seven were still at the core of what Rick was doing with this music but at the same time not only was he really streamlining his music more here but drawing out more of the "punk" in his funk if you get my drift. Four of the seven songs on the original album are hard and heavy funk all encompassed by Rick's new music flavors.Read more ›

I was very excited to hear that "Fire It UP" was finally being reissued. This in my opinion is one of his finest moments. Just about every track is outstanding, this is Rick at the peak of his powers. "Fire it Up", "Love Gun", "loving You is A Pleasure" and a lush balad to boot. This & "Garden of Love are probably my favorites by him and fortunately that's been reissued too!

This was Rick, pre-Super Freak, and he was much better. After Street Songs, he started falling off. These songs are funky, melodic, and sexy. Rick was the joint and as far as I am concerned, the last R&B band, self-contained with horns, was the Stone City Band. Miss you Rick, you changed the game! I suggest all of his pre-Street Songs albums to be in your collections!!
