This was he third album by the talented duo known as the Ka'au Crater Boys. and their efforts won them the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Contemporary Album of the Year! Their recording of "Opihi Man", a catchy ode to challenging and sometimes life-threatening work of the opihi pickers, earned Big Island composer Craig Kamahele "Song of the Year" honors as well. Skilled at playing bass and acoustic guitar, Cruz is the son of famous Hawaiian musician Ernie Cruz, Sr. and brother to popular solo entertainer, John Cruz. Fernandez, a master on his ukulele and bass, performs with wizardry and vitality. He has become a key figure in the resurgence of interest in the ukulele, causing such a stir among young kids that like the old days way back when, it's not uncommon to see kids playing ukulele as they stroll down the street or make their way between classes at school.

I first heard Opihi Man at a hula show in Kona given by a local hula halau. Loved the song then went to a record store and (badly) sang it for the clerk. He pointed me in the direction of this CD. But Opihi Man is only one of the great songs on this CD! The vocals, harmonies, and guitar playing are great, and it brings me back to driving the back roads of all the islands. Even people not familiar with Hawaiian music will like this CD.

Not only is this the Ka'au Crater Boys best album, but it's probably one of the greatest and best known Hawaiian albums of all time. Virtually every song on the CD is a hit and got a ton of airplay on local Hawaiian radio stations. Their ability to take country music songs and put a "local" spin on it, is awesome.

This is the best CD, I've been borrowing it from a friend and I just keep listening to it over and over again while I work. It's mellow and nostalgic and just fabulous!
