First let me say that I'm going to be 44 years old this November. So I was alive and kicking through the vast majority of SRV's recording career. I remember the corny videos on MTV, I still remember where I was when I first heard news of the helicopter crash. I have been an avid fan of Stevie since I first saw his videos on MTV. ...That's how we heard about new music back then...no internet!

So, since Stevie's passing there seems to have been more releases than when he was alive. Boxed sets, lost concerts, greatest hits recompiled as nauseum, just the typical milking of a great artist who's passing preceded possibilities as an artist. That's not to say all of the CDs that have been released post-death have been poor.

Having said all of the above, I looked at this CD with dubious cynicism. I researched it online and this CD originates from a Radio Broadcast in July 3 and 5th of 1989. That alone makes me think it's going to be a high level boot at best. But here is where it gets amazing...

This CD is, in my opinion, the best commercially available presentation of Stevie's live playing...heck, of his playing at all. I have everything, the boxed set, the re-released CDs with the bonus material, I actually have a number of boots. But this CD just floored me.

Remember too, that at this point in Stevie's life he has genuinely cleaned up and sober. It shows in spades. His playing on here, even at its most fast, chaotic, and furious, is meticulous and flawless. NEVER missing a beat, a note, or anything. The phrasing and timing is impeccable. Simply top form.

And in case you're sick of hearing the same songs done live on all the other discs out there, this disc stands apart in a few ways. The tempo of some of the songs is changed a bit.

These gigs have been floating around as bootlegs for many years and in many forms so it is great to see this available as a more cohesive release. The quality of the recording is far better than most fans may have heard on bootlegs and this sounds like it has been tidied up somewhat.
What cannot be denied is the quality of the playing and to hear how well the songs still stand up. Most of all, fans will revel in how good it is to hear SRV in the greatest form of his life.
The performances are simply jaw dropping and the version of 'Life Without You' has to be heard to be believed. This track will melt your face if the earlier versions of 'Tightrope' and 'Leave My Girl Alone' have not rendered you unconscious while you try to comprehend how good this man was.
SRV fans ignore this release at your peril!

Great CD, it's definitely a keeper! "Fair Warning" This CD has only 11 tracks and does not have any Jeff Beck Tracks. Tracks 1-6 @ Tingley Coliseum (11-28-1989). Track List: 1).The House Is Rockin'. 2).Tightrope. 3).Look At Little Sister. 4).Texas Flood. 5).Leave My Girl Alone. 6).Wall Of Denial. Tracks 7-11 @ McNicols Arena (11-29-1989). 7).Superstition. 8).Cold Shot. 9).Life Without You. 10).Crossfire. 11).Voodoo Chile (11:31).

I was skeptical even after reading a couple of good 5 star reviews, I was not worried about whether the performance or music would be great. SRV and DT with Reese Wynans never failed to deliver, I was concerned with the recording quality as it does emanate from radio broadcasts done at the two concert venues, and one of the reviewers did mention it may have lower volume level/and or lower dynamic range. After listening at home and in my car(high quality components, subwoofer, amps etc.), the verdict is: There is less dynamic range and it plays at a slightly lower volume than your typical CD. Also, check your EQ settings as it sounds as though they have "enhanced" some frequencies, especially the low end. A flatter setting on the tone controls will yield a more balanced tighter sound, the bass frequencies do not need a boost. Everything musically is there, Stevie's guitar, Tommys's bass, Chris's drums/cymbals and even Reese's organ/keys, it just doesn't' have that studio recorded quality that gives you "air" around the instruments or a convincing sound-stage. I would describe it as somewhat compressed.

But of course, it's not a studio recording. You can hear the very appreciative crowd, and even individuals yelling out when Stevie raps about his sobriety during a quiet break in a very powerful rendition of "Life Without You". All in all, I'm glad I bought it, even at $17.00. (Now $25!) I saw Stevie live in June 1986 (Cincy) and April 1988 (Boston). I feel lucky to have seen and experienced his music live. For those who have not, I guess this is a good representation of his live shows, although I still love to watch "Live at the El Mocambo" a club date from 1983 on DVD, originally bought it on VHS. That way you get to hear and see the "Fire and the Fury" of Stevie's incredible talent.

Read Glen Murley's well-detailed review for a more complete description of this CD, but I just wanted to chime in that this CD is INDISPENSABLE for any SRV fan!! Both SRV and his crackerjack Double Trouble are firing on all cylinders throughout...the best live performance from them I have ever heard!! Listen to how locked in the band is to each other on their timing and rhythm...it's like the recordings were fixed in Pro Tools or something...lol!

My only gripe is that there is not more of it on here! But what we have here is truly amazing...his version of "Leave My Little Girl Alone" on this CD is jaw-dropping in its intensity...not only his playing, but his singing, too. GREAT guitar tone, not surprisingly! I say that because I thought his tone on the post-drug Austin City Limits performance (around this time) was crap. Not here, buddy! Just pure SRV at his best who, like Glen M. says, never hits a bad note in this performance! Also, the sound quality is just fine! I thought at first it might sound like a typical bootleg, but nope, the sound quality is pretty much on par with any other legitimate SRV live recording. GET THIS CD NOW!!
