Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Young Alamayu's bravery goes unrewarded by a selfish rich man until the boy's clever sister puts things to rights. "Exceptional watercolors of Ethiopian mountains and mountain people quicken Kurtz's revision of a well-known tale," said PW. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4-A newly illustrated version of a well-known Ethiopian folktale about a clever shepherd boy and his sister. In exchange for a bag of money and four cows, Alemayu accepts a challenge from his sister's boastful, rich employer to spend the night alone on a mountain with minimal clothing and without a fire. He survives the bitterly cold night by concentrating on a shepherd's fire across the way on another mountain. The haughty man refuses to pay him, stating that looking at someone else's fire is the same as building one's own-until the siblings devise a plan that allows the man to see the foolishness of his reasoning. Lewis has done an outstanding job of capturing the warmth and simplicity of the tale through his beautiful, watercolor paintings. They bring the story to life, complementing the emotion, expression, and character of the printed words. While other versions, including one by Harold Courlander, are available, this is a well-written retelling that's sure to be enjoyed whether read individually or aloud.-Jos N. Holman, Cleve.-Hts.

More About the Author

Jane Kurtz was born in Portland, Oregon, but when she was two years old, her parents decided to move to Ethiopia, where she spent most of her childhood. She didn't live in the United States for more than a couple of year-long visits (in Boise and Pasadena) until she started college, feeling like an awkward outsider. Her books set in Ethiopia have helped her give glimpses into the land of her childhood.

Now Jane speaks about being an author at schools and conferences--in all but eleven of the United States, so far, and such places as Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, France, Germany, Romania, England, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Japan. Her travels have put her in touch with all kinds of kids who are changing the world, one kid at a time, something her idealistic parents made her also want to do. Thus she helped start Ethiopia Reads (www.ethiopiareads.org), a nonprofit that is planting the first libraries for children in Ethiopia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courage, July 30, 2001

The book in a very Ethiopian way talks about a courageous boy and his sister questioning authority. I read the book to my 6-year-old by sight translating it into Amharic; I thank the author for telling the story beautifully.

I have a biological and an adoptive daughter (from Ethiopia), and they both love this book. Great story and beautiful illustrations. One of our favorites, and we have a lot of books. It's the only one we've ever written a review about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, May 18, 2008
This review is from: Fire on the Mountain (Aladdin Picture Books) (Paperback)
The combination of colours and language throughout this book creates an effect missing from many on the children's market. This sort of promotion of cultural diversity is needed in the West.
