New Wave of Rapso, December 16, 1999

This review is from: The Fire Next Time (Audio CD)
I agree with Billborad. "Among the most interesting weaves of various influences-from African to dance and spoken word-comes from all male quartet 3 Canal's "The Fire Next Time" album, released in the last quarter of '99. Steadily building an international fan base, 3 Canal is generally lumped with T&T's exciting new wave of "rapso" (rap plus calypso) artists, but that term can't contain the originanity that has placed this group on a fast track to global pop stardom". - Elena Oumano Billboard Magazine Dec 11th '99

Solid mature album with many musical influences, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fire Next Time (Audio CD)
3Canal has fulfilled the promise that was shown in Book of Blue in 1997. Musically, 3 Canal used live instrumentation to bring an edge and authenticity to the sound of the album, and took on the challenge of expressing the versatility of the rapso flow over a diverse range of rhythms from calypso and the pulsating jab jab rhythm to Latin, funk, groove, ambient, drum & bass and dance influences. And these guys can really SING! I particularly like "Peace Chant" and "I Believe". This cd is definitely worth buying. It's great driving & dancing music.

See them live if you're in Trinidad, August 28, 2005
This review is from: The Fire Next Time (Audio CD)
So original and distinctive, when you hear the clang and boom of the group's danceable beat, you know right away it's 3 Canal. Their political commentary is funny and biting with being bitter. "Talk Yuh Talk" is for the politicians in Trinidad who fatten their pockets and don't care about their fellow man. The album name is a line from that same song, "He promise the fire next time...". In other words, he (the poli leader made many promises and never made good on them). 3 Canal are positive men, well read, heavily involved in the music and theatre in their country. If you're in Trinidad during the pre-Carnival season, you have to see them live. A real treat and true to the record. They put on a show with skits and characters humourously criticising the inherent flaws and resilient spirit of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. They have great party songs too, but then again you can groove to anything on this record.
