This is the story of the worst offshore disaster. I work offshore. During numerous safety training and survival training classes; the trainer would refer to the Piper Alpha. "This is why there are fully enclosed lifeboats at opposite ends of the platform". "This is why the control rooms, living quarters, and main lifeboat stations are clustered together behind a fire and blast barrier." "This is why we have a daily crew brief on all work being done."

It makes sense to be careful - but why all of the references to the Piper Alpha? So, I found "Fire in the Night" on Amazon. I was working on the Shell - Mars platform in the Gulf of Mexico. If you are going to read one of the most heart wrenching, frightening, and true stories about what can go wrong on an offshore platform that is the place. By the time I finished reading how an overlooked, unreported, fix could change an oil platform into burning scrap in an hour and a half - I became the most attentive person in all of the safety briefs, observant worker out on the platform, and double check all of the paperwork before and after doing any work.

This is a MUST READ for anyone working offshore or anyone contemplating a career offshore. It is not a "fun" read, but one that will focus anyone on being attentive to their involvement in their surroundings.

A great book....dealing with the people who experienced it rather than the legal issues. I would recomment it to anyone who wants to know more about the people than the disaster itself.

A must read for anyone connected with offshore life. The reality of the dangers faced everyday and taken for granted by those on the beach. Hopefully these men and woman did not die in vain and their tragedy will save life's in the future.

This account of the fire is almost too complete. It overwhelms with minutiae but lacks a few things that could have helped, like an illustration of the places described in the narrative. It was a gripping story but bogged down at times with unnecessary details.
