Book Description

December 1, 1998
The sudden death of her mother prompts a beautiful young woman to return to the Cajun birthplace she'd abandoned as a teenager, and hoped never to see again. Back in the bayou, she renews her relationship with her former lover while trying to come to grips with her mysterious Creole heritage. But when la fantome noir--the dark spirit that haunts the bayou--appears in the swamps, she is called to battle, and must find the powerful Fire Opal--which is her only hope for survival. Together, she and her former lover must embark into uncharted swamp waters to recover the magical talisman...and perhaps rekindle their lost love.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Liz Deveraux has been running from her Louisiana roots for more than 15 years. Nothing could make her go back to her life as Izzy except for her mother's funeral. Upon her return, Liz is caught up in Cajun superstition as her father deems that she must now become "The Keeper of the Fire Opal." As the Keeper, Liz must fight Ankouer - le fantome noir. She is the last Guardian. All this seems to be a little much for Liz, especially considering that she has shed all trappings of her earlier life. That's where her former boyfriend Zachary Fortier comes in. Left behind all those years ago, Zach is ready to settle his feelings for Liz, but not until they take care of Ankouer (the evil spirit). And in the process of traveling through the swamps, their relationship is put to the test. With Zach's help, Liz goes to battle. They face all sorts of diversity thrown at them by this evil being. And when the confrontation comes, only their love can withstand the evil. This one stretches the realms of the possibility, lending itself to be more of a thriller than a romance. The foray into Cajun folklore is refreshing, yet a confusing. Ms. Flynn has an avid imagination brought to the forefront by her depiction of Ankouer, the evil spirit. 5.0 out of 5 stars Super supernatural, a gripping story to sweep you away, November 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fire Opal (Paperback)
This book was a new experience for me, one of those I didn't realize what I was walking into-or reading into. (Forgive the poor grammar.) However, reading on I found it impossible to put down, couldn't turn loose of the story or the characters, because I had to know what happened to them, regardless whether or not this was the type of book I usually read. It wasn't my usual thing, but it made no difference. Connie kept me hooked.

Her imagery skills as she wrote the words made the story unfold in my mind as if it were a wide-screen movie, and I had the best seat in the house. The only hard thing to swallow (no pun intended) was the hero's ever bottomless flask, which defied explanation. <G>

Bored with the same old, same old...? I highly recommend Fire Opal by Connie Flynn if you're looking for something different. It's truly wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fire Opal, August 12, 2000

This review is from: The Fire Opal (Paperback)
Finding a book that I am unable to put down is a real treat. Fire Opal is just this type of book. The author offers well develped characters, a great plot, and lots of suspense. Fire Opal takes you into the world of the Cajuns living in the LA. swamps and a world that includes witchcraft, vodoo, and demons. It is a world where "good" and "evil" battle, with love being the key to the war. The author does an excellent job of bringing the paranormal to life in a most believable manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Natural, February 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fire Opal (Paperback)
I got this book several months ago and put off reading it because it seemed like other books were calling out to me. I wish I would have read this book sooner. I loved it! The storyline was interesting and different.

Liz ran away from home 20 years ago at the age of 15 after a frightening incident. She left behind her boyfriend and her family and let them believe she was dead. Twenty years later she returns to Louisiana, shocking the entire town to find out that she is alive. She soon discovers she is still in love with her teenage lover, Zach, and also finds out that she is the guardian of the Fire Opal. An interesting book with supernatural powers. A must read!
