Editorial Reviews

2010 2 CD, reissue of this landmark album, originally released in 1989. On Fire is widely recognized as the canonic pinnacle of Galaxie 500's career. The artwork conveys this, with a low-angle shot of the band, looking up towards an amber sky. This record marked the realization of their signature sound. Nowhere is it clearer than on the album opener, 'Blue Thunder', the closest a song can come to waves crashing on a beach in song form. Lyrically inconsequential, with a chorus composed entirely of 'la's', the track's power lies in a systematic build and break of intensity that reaches a Spector-like climax.

1.0 out of 5 stars An insulting rip-off, May 9, 2010

This review is from: On Fire/Peel Sessions (Audio CD)
Just when you thought it was safe to collect physical copies of your favorite albums, Damon & Naomi re-release the Galaxie 500 catalog with inferior packaging (the plastic CD cover rips the actual CD tray card when opened on all 3 releases I purchased), redundant "liner notes" (all 3 albums have the exact same liner notes as the other, which are actually copied from the 1997 reissues with the year "1997" substituted for "2010" in the first sentence of each review - embarrassingly lame), and by the way - no noticeable improvement on anything, in fact it's a step backward if you go out of your way to purchase these. Seems like the band wanted to get rid of their CD inventory so they "reissued" what they had as double CDs, didn't change anything as far as art or commentary, and got the cheapest possible jewelcases to do it which rip the cover. Want to see how a reissue should be done? Go check out Mission of Burma's recent reissues with informative and funny commentary, rare photographs, a hefty booklet with each disc, and a package where you get bang for your buck. Not the case here. What a shame.
