Book Description

February 6, 2003
THE END OF THE WORLD HAS COME -- BUT THE HORROR HAS ONLY BEGUN. PREPARE FOR THE WORST. GET READY TO BE CONSUMED BY FIRE "Every so often, a truly seminal book is published in the horror field. Blatty's The Exorcist, King's The Stand, Barker's Books of Blood. Alan Rodgers' Fire is such a book. It is a tale of amazing sweep and scope, uniting Biblical prophecies and hightech, ancient horrors with new ones cobbled up from labs and shadows. After this book, everything changes." -- J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon Five "With Fire, Alan Rodgers shows that he can set the whole world of horror alight. Powerful, frightening, apocalyptic." -- Graham Masterton

2.0 out of 5 stars It had potential, but poor editing hurts this book, December 4, 2004

I love apocalyptic novels. The fact that I have already read the two best apocalyptic novels, "The Stand" and "Swan Song" does not affect my judgement when I say this book is not good. I'll admit, I didn't finish it, I only got half way through it, but I tried. It had a great deal going for it, the Beast of revelations in the flesh, the dead rising, these are things that would make a great book in my opinion, so what went wrong? well, first off, there are good portions that are just boring. One character, Luke sits in a McDonalds drinking a coke for pages while a kid explains to him common everday things we already know. Boring. Why the author chose to describe to us how to use an ATM machine, or how coke feels in your throat, I do not know. Plus, he has a tendency to tell you a character is going to die before he does. Why? It is the most irritating device I have ever read. At least you can forgive it in "Swan Song" because it is a well written book, but Fire is not. In one Chapter the kid takes Luke's credit card and withdraws cash from an ATM after figuring out Luke's PIN, and then the next chapter mentions that Luke can't stay in a hotel because he has no credit card. Plus the author mistakenly refers to Luke as another character (trust me, I did not misread it). Regardless of how much I wanted to enjoy this book, the lack of attention by the author and the editor was too irritating and the boring sections too long. The comparisons to "The Stand" and "Swan Song" are far off the mark. The two can hardly be compared to each other.BTW, if for some reason you don't believe me, DO NOT PAY $20 for this book. That price is ridiculous, I paid four dollars for it. If you want to buy it, e-mail me and I'll sell it to you for $3 which includes shipping cost.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't finish it., June 15, 2010

I think it read on the cover that it was compared to The Stand and Swan Song...um....not really. I've read dozens and dozens (and dozens) of apocalyptic novels, and was hoping for a good one. I never found the story even moderately engaging and I don't think I even finished it... maybe someday I'll read it again, when books are no longer being printed and I have read everything else in my library ten times......

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!!!, March 13, 2005
This review is from: Fire (Paperback)
The first book I've ever read that I constantly had questions about the writer's age (how does a 12 year old get a book published), grasp of the english language, whether he actually had an editor, how he managed to get this book into print (if he could do it, anyone can!), etc, etc. I am struggling to finish this, determined to as I spent my hard-earned cash and want my moneys worth! I'm taking the time to write this to save some other poor soul from purchasing this piece of junk. Might be a mighty fine start for a budding 9 or 10 year old writer, but it's just amazing to me that a grown man could write this, and then actually succeed in getting it published!
