Review
With Fire, Alan Rodgers shows that he can set the whole world of horror alight. Powerful, frightening, apocalyptic. -- Graham Masterton

Product Description
THE END OF THE WORLD HAS COME. BUT THE HORROR HAS ONLY BEGUN.

THE PRESIDENT A madman with his finger on the button — he’s determined to bring the rapture and Armageddon to an evil world. . . .

THE SCIENTIST He accidentally discovered the cure for death — but for the newly risen it’s not a blessing, only eternal damnation. . . .

THE PREACHER He’s taken over the media to spread his apocalyptic message to an army of rabid listeners hell-bent on a second inquisition. . . .

THE BEAST

Hideously deformed, it stalks the ravaged land bringing promise and panic with its eerie, clairvoyant powers. . . .

Now a small band of men and women — both dead and alive — are being summoned to heartland America and the ultimate showdown between good and evil . . . to a clash of forces undreamt in their darkest nightmares . . . to an orgy of violence where not even death can end the torments of the flesh. . . .

2.0 out of 5 stars A decent "train book", March 19, 2005
I bought a paperback of this book in a thrift shop for a quarter and it was my latest book that I read solely on my train ride to/from work. It's a rather long train ride.

Now, I LOVE end-of-the-world books. The Stand, Swan Song--wow. This book is definitely NOT in the same league.

The writing is at times juvenile. The characters are two-dimensional--even the dog. The overarching story is interesting, but the author never pulled me in to the point that I was compelled to pull the book out of my backpack and read it anywhere but on the train.

Whoever copyedited this book needs to be retired from the business. Simple errors were not caught.

Final thoughts--an okay book, but I'm glad I paid only a quarter for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars It had potential, but poor editing hurts this book, December 4, 2004

(REAL NAME)
I love apocalyptic novels. The fact that I have already read the two best apocalyptic novels, "The Stand" and "Swan Song" does not affect my judgement when I say this book is not good. I'll admit, I didn't finish it, I only got half way through it, but I tried. It had a great deal going for it, the Beast of revelations in the flesh, the dead rising, these are things that would make a great book in my opinion, so what went wrong? well, first off, there are good portions that are just boring. One character, Luke sits in a McDonalds drinking a coke for pages while a kid explains to him common everday things we already know. Boring. Why the author chose to describe to us how to use an ATM machine, or how coke feels in your throat, I do not know. Plus, he has a tendency to tell you a character is going to die before he does. Why? It is the most irritating device I have ever read. At least you can forgive it in "Swan Song" because it is a well written book, but Fire is not. In one Chapter the kid takes Luke's credit card and withdraws cash from an ATM after figuring out Luke's PIN, and then the next chapter mentions that Luke can't stay in a hotel because he has no credit card. Plus the author mistakenly refers to Luke as another character (trust me, I did not misread it). Regardless of how much I wanted to enjoy this book, the lack of attention by the author and the editor was too irritating and the boring sections too long. The comparisons to "The Stand" and "Swan Song" are far off the mark. The two can hardly be compared to each other.BTW, if for some reason you don't believe me, DO NOT PAY $20 for this book. That price is ridiculous, I paid four dollars for it. If you want to buy it, e-mail me and I'll sell it to you for $3 which includes shipping cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horrific-Fantasy at its finest..., April 28, 2000
This review is from: Fire (Mass Market Paperback)
A sprawling, apocalyptic novel about three groups of people converging to help save the world from a madman. Nuclear explosions, worldwide panic, and a scientist whose found a cure for...DEATH? It sounds a little hokey but Rodgers does an excellent job telling a smart story while using a down to earth voice throughout.
