There are many things young children should know about fire safety. Most of the information young children learn about comes in bits and pieces from parents, caretakers, teachers, special programs and television. One of the best ways to learn is reading about it. In this book the young reader will learn about how matches can cause fires, staying away from flames, keeping far enough away from fireplaces (sparks), the need for smoke alarms ("Beep! Beep!"), how firemen will help you, the need for fire escape plans, why you should not hide in a fire, checking to see if a door is hot, how to escape a fire, what to do if you catch fire and planning a meeting place in the event of one.

Feel your door first to see if it is hot."

"Smoke may fill the room.
Crawl on the floor below the smoke."

When a child actually reads a book on his own it can cement safety rules in their heads. Most of the words can be easily deciphered with only a few that are challenging. This is an early reader book that beginning readers can read with some assistance. There are numerous photographs to illustrate the lessons being learned. In the back of the book there is an index, a picture glossary and some challenge books. This would be an excellent read and discuss book in the homeschool or classroom setting. It is a book worth considering for any library!
