Despite the many reviews and various sites online stating this heater doesn't 'throw heat' as it should, this heater works exactly as it should.

Infrared heaters act like the sun. They don't throw heat per se, they provide rays of energy that can be absorbed when you are in their path: i.e. when you're out in the sun you feel the warmth because your body and clothing absorb the rays - but when you're in the shade you are out of reach of most of the rays and therefore don't get warm.

These heaters don't have fans, they are made to provide heat to items directly around or under them.

This particular heater is exactly as it is described. The base is very heavy and sturdy, the construction is exceptional, and though it can be used indoors and outdoors you need to remember to keep at least 12"-18" between the top and sides of the heater and the ceiling and walls. Since it stands 7' tall you won't have enough space inside most houses for the heater to function without fire hazard. That said, it's perfect for a porch or when you're sitting outside and need a little extra heat.

I love this heater. The infrared heat is completely different from the standard heater - It truly warms you from the inside out. Very strange experience at first because the ambient temperature outside of your body doesn't change a bit, and you think the heater's not working. But then you start to not feel cold and realize that you're getting warm INSIDE. People love it, and it inpires almost everyone to buy infrared in the future.

The other advantage of this type of heater over standard electric heat is that people can sit very close to it without getting fried. I have my heater on a small front porch (10x10'), and I appreciate that my furniture and guests can sit around and under it with no problem.

Recently had some cool nights in Texas and wanted some heat. Turned on the unit and a nice light came on, but no real heat. We figured it may take a few minutes to "warm up" and gave it some time. After ten minutes, we were not impressed, so we figured since it is radiant heat, we would sit directly under the unit. After another ten minutes or so, we looked at each other like we were idiots. It barely gives off the heat you might get through a window on a sunny day.

We decided to purchase a propane unit, and what a difference! Great heat and very little noise. No comparison. Don't waste your money unless you want an attractive lamp for outdoors!

I don't know what other reviewers are talking about when they say "it works like it should" etc. or that that this type of hear is different but effective.

It is not. Have tried it several times and it is no more than a radiant heat source where you have to be really close to the head of the lamp to feel any heat. At 5-6 feet away you feel absolutely nothing.

Unfortunately, I got rid of the packaging and tried it a couple of months after buying (were waiting to finish the deck), otherwise it would have gone straight back.

I was looking for an alternative for my propane heater. The electric aspect was really its selling point as I liked the convenience of an on/off switch. Very disappointed. The finish of the product was good, so it looked nice on the patio. It also produces a nice glow that is pleasant. Those are the extent of its qualities. Heating aspect: nonexistent! Phoenix evenings are not harsh (60 degrees on this winter night) and this barely provided any perceptible heat as I sat directly under it for 15 minutes on its "high" setting. My propane heater outdid this heater with only its pilot light on! Needless to say it was shipped back the next day. Don't waste your time unless you want an outdoor lamp. I can't believe the company would market this as a heater.

The unit is easy to assemble - nee, very easy to assemble. Well constructed, looks great. Functionally the heat output is not great. We're using it on our patio, and while it is better than nothing, it is not much better than nothing.In 40 degree temperatures the heat difference can be only felt within 3 feet of the coils.

Quite disappointed in the heat throw of this item. If there's a breeze at all, it's not effective. I'll purchase a gas one next time.

*I bought this because it was advertised as an indoor-outdoor heater. But on the box it says do not use to heat a room! This thing is huge. The shade is gigantic! When you look up at it while you are standing you are treated to a full view of the massive, dangerously hot-looking bare heating element. Wouldn't want to sit anywhere near it outdoors either. I sent it back.
