Book Description

October 1, 1994
"Unforgettable." The Washington Post Book World.
The Civil War is still twenty years away when Rose, an escaped mulatto slave girl, arrives in the town of Pequot Landing. Soon after, a school for "colored misses" is established. This fuels a firestorm between the abolitionist Talcott family and the wealthy Grimes family, owners of mills that depend on slave-picked cotton. Into the blaze steps schoolmistress Georgiana Ross and rakehell sea captain Sinjin Grimes. Now all these players find themselves caught up in the dramatic sweep of history . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set, like its predecessor, in pre-Civil War New England, this sequel to The Wings of the Morning matches both the verbosity and the compulsive readability of the earlier novel, as Tryon continues to focus on the lives of the citizens of Pequot Landing. In the wake of the ill-fated romance between roguish sea captain Sinjin Grimes and well-bred Aurora Talcott, daughter of the Connecticut town's leading citizen, the bitter feud between the proslavery Grimes family and the fiercely abolitionist Talcotts still simmers. The catalyst of the action here is patriarch Bobby Talcott, who attempts to found a free school for Negro and Indian girls under the direction of Georgianna Ross, a Talcott protege. Her first pupil is Rose Mills, a fugitive slave who proves surprisingly truculent and devious. The small school faces immediate danger from town rowdies, and more permanent damage from a restrictive state law sponsored by the Grimes faction. Subplots abound, splintering into distracting miniplots, as an almost overwhelming number of archtypal figures (the indomitable Talcott matriarch; the hypocritical deacon Grimes; the doomed lovers) weave their way in and out of countless overwritten episodes. Despite Tryon's excesses, uncontrolled verbiage, fans of the genre will enjoy this literate romantic saga and will lament the fact that the author passed away before seeing to completion the third volume of the projected trilogy. From Library Journal

Star-crossed lovers, longstanding feuds, tragic accidents, and other adventures befalling the Talcott family keep the plot whizzing along at a good clip in this sequel to The Wings of the Morning ( LJ 9/1/90). The time is the 1840s. The Talcotts rescue runaway slave Rose and recruit Georgie Ross (who remains a compelling main character) to run a school for "colored misses." The school violently divides Pequot Landing, with some citizens opposing education for blacks, and Rose's conniving further complicates several lives. The Talcotts and their rivals in the Grimes family, predictably, find this a splendid opportunity for further feuding. Overall, this juicy family saga with its well-drawn historical details is sure to please those who like the genre and is a must for those who enjoyed the first volume. BOMC alternate; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 12/91.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tryon Sequel a Triumph, January 21, 2010

This review is from: In the Fire of Spring (Mass Market Paperback)
Tom Tryon's first novel,"The Wings of the Morning", was published in 1990. Sadly, this wonderful author died in 1991 and this sequel, Fire of the Spring", was published by his estate in 1992. I would recommend reading these books in order. Together, they contain a thirteen hundred page portrait of Talcots and the Grimes, two feuding families who live in Pequot Landing, Connecticut just prior to the Revolutionary War.
This is one of those big, juicy novels populated with so many characters that one is thankful for the the list of their names and relationships in the front of the book
I loved Tryon's detailed descriptions of his characters and their surroundings. The reader learns the color and style of clothing and can "see" the backdrops on which his drama plays itself out. Kingdom Come, the wealthy Talcot's home and the snug little cottage of aging Aunt Hat are among many places that are enriched by his ability to "set the scene."
The trials of those who wish to abolish slavery, the love triangles and entanglements of its central characters, keep the reader engrossed and turning pages well into the night.
Sadly, Tryon had planned to write a Kingdom Come series and now we'll never learn the futures of his wonderfully delineated characters.
