Book Description

This traditional Hopi story is set in a mythic time when people and animals were still able to communicate and interact with each other. By emphasizing the dependence of humans on animals, the story affirms the vital connections among all living species.Illustrator Ken Gary was inspired by ancient Pueblo kiva murals, especially those at Pottery Mound in New Mexico and Awat’ovi and Kawaika-a in Arizona. The illustrations are reminiscent of the highly stylized, geometric, two-dimensional mythological motifs of these murals.

Third in a series based on collaboration between storyteller Michael Lomatuway’ma and Professor Malotki, this book follows The Mouse Couple (1988) and The Magic Hummingbird (1996).

About the Author

Ekkehart Malotki is professor of languages at Northern Arizona University, where he has taught Latin, Hopi and German since 1977. For over twenty-five years, his research has focused on preserving aspects of Hopi language and culture. In addition to numerous collections of Hopi narratives, he has published two children's books, The mouse Couple and The Magic Hummingbird. Illustrator Ken Gary is an artist, writer and craftsman who has been seriously studying American Indians since he was a young boy in a small town in Texas, reading everything he could find on the subject. When he got older, he became especially interested in the people of the Southwest, particularly the hopis and their ancestors.
