Editorial Reviews

Review

Ages 9-15 "The Fire Stone is a charming story with relatable characters for young adult readers...the story zips along with much action and humor, and the characters are likable... Carney has imbued Matt with an appealing combination of humility and longing for adventure, making him an easy character to root for. When he rescues a baby alorath (a largish catlike creature with feathers and magical abilities) from abusive circus workers and goes to live with his teacher, Alem, the tale is kicked off with true excitement. The elves, Emmon and Arden, have their own separate quest, but their story - along with that of Lucian, the wizard - dovetail nicely as the story evolves...abundantly blessed with adventure and appeal." --Kirkus Discoveries

"This YA Fantasy is exceptionally remarkable in that it is the first in a series (Reign of the Elements) of five books, with a new series soon to begin, all written by a sixteen-year-old young lady from Colorado. It features a Cinderella-like human boy, Matt, a magical giant bird-like Alorath named Sam, two elves, a dwarf, a wizard, and a warrior. Matt has been abused by his parents all his fifteen years. In between his many chores, he has been taught by the dwarf, and now the wizard steps forward to watch over Matt and guide him on a totally new path on his own. He can't help but pick up more friends along the way to saving small kingdoms and searching for the first elemental talisman--the Fire Stone. All the time he and his friends and mentors fight against forces of the Dark Lord in a race to obtain the stone. Matt discovers he is capable of magic and also learns how to fight to defend himself and the forces of good.

"Ms Carney reminds me so much of Christopher Paolini and his youthful start. She includes the best elements of a good fantasy without going overboard. Her characters are likeable and realistic. The plot has plenty of twists, with friends and family really being totally what they did not seem. There is humor, coming of age, values, and logic buried throughout the story. It's a pleasant read for young and old. We rated this book five hearts." --Bob Spear, Author, Editor, Owner/The Book Barn

"A treasure for genre fans that should not be overlooked!

"Five stars out of five stars! "The Fire Stone" is the first entry in Riley Carney's 'The Reign of Elements' telling the tales of the land of Mundaria. Following a boy from the backwoods of the land and his adventures in searching for the fire stone, "The Fire Stone" is a treasure for genre fans that should not be overlooked." -- Midwest Book Review

More About the Author

Riley Carney writes for teenagers from a unique perspective - she is a teenager. Her stories are based on genuine adolescent ideas and emotions. Riley's charcters are vibrant and appealing, and her stories are exciting adventures filled with action and humor.

Riley is now eighteen years old. She was fifteen when she wrote The Fire Stone. The next two books in The Reign of the Elements series, The Water Stone and The Wind Stone, were also written while she was fifteen. The last two books in the five-book series, The Immortality Scroll and The Final Alliance, were written after Riley turned sixteen.

Riley has also written an urban fantasy trilogy for teens.

In addition to her enchanting writing, Riley is very involved with children's literacy. She believes that teaching children to read breaks the cycle of poverty and exploitation of children. When she was fourteen, Riley created a non-profit organization called Breaking the Chain with the goal of eliminating illiteracy for children. She has built three schools in Africa, created a children's literacy center in a woman's shelter in Colorado, and bought 20,000 new books for classrooms in high-need elemtary and middle schools in the U.S. Some of the profits from Riley's books will help fight illiteracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riley Carney's First Book, April 22, 2010

The Fire Stone (Reign of the Elements, Book 1)

I met Riley Carney on Twitter where my 'screen name' is @Writers_Cafe. One day, in November of 2009, she appeared on my followers list, requesting that I follow her. When I saw she ran her own non-profit literacy charity, I was hooked. I wrote an article about Riley ([...]) shortly after that. For my efforts, she sent me a copy of "THe Fire Stone."

Having learned to read pre-kindergarten, I've been reading for close to 60 years now - and I've never been as entranced with a book as I was with The Fire Stone. It is difficult to believe it was written by a 15-year old from suburban Denver. The truth is, however, that the story was floating around in her head for years before it was committed to paper!

The story is about a teen-aged boy, Matt, who suffers abuse at the hands of his parents. His experiences with dwarfs and elves is both amazing and interesting. Early on, he finds a magical bird and the two become fast friends. He collects a little band of followers who fall into a great conspiracy that threatens life in his corner of the world. Together, they work towards a common goal.

What is really amazing is that between the lines, there are messages. We're all the same, even if we look different. We can work together for the common good. We can overcome difficulties in our lives. But, somehow, it's a very easy read.

Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. This is a book intended for youngsters, not oldsters like me, but I truly couldn't put it down. While reading, I was transported to Matt's world - I saw what he saw. I learned what he learned, I felt what he felt.

Forget that Riley is 'just a teenager,' she is one special lady with a very worthwhile goal in life - to bring literacy to the world, one book at a time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical story, January 28, 2010
This review is from: The Fire Stone (Reign of the Elements, Book 1) (Hardcover)
Now and then I feel the need to be swept away by magical stories, and that's when I put down adult literature and pick up a book that will allow me to become a child again. The Fire Stone was clever, well written, and a thoroughly entertaining read. Adventure and unexpected twists kept me turning the pages. I loved how the author threaded the learning of important values and friendship into a story that was action-packed and witty. And Matt, the main character, was enormously likable. There's something here for everyone, and Ms. Carney did an exceptional job of crafting a story that was as charming as it was entertaining.
