Using your head in an emergency.
This book shows what it is like to be in the middle of a firestorm in the wilderness. The people who were floating the river did nothing wrong, they were just caught in a bad situation. By not panicking, they were able to survive. There is also some education about the long-term effects of a forest fire.

The illustrations make this book
Boy lead character, ok for younger readers, still exciting for middle grades. Axel keeps his head in a crisis. Jean Craighead George does a good job with the science of wildfires and shows the regenerative nature of forest fires. Without the illustrations, there is not much story here.
