Great Collection...STILL not complete!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire: The Very Best of The Pointer Sisters (Audio CD)
This 2-CD collection is very thorough that even casual fans should be willing to buy and forget the usual single CD hits collection. All the major hits are here: "Fire", "Slow Hand", and songs from their most successful album "Break Out".However, there is not enough material from their early Blue Thumb recording. The good news: there is a "best of" album for that period that to me is essential. That's the reasoning for my title. The packaging is good: the pictures and liner notes are exceptional. There are no lyrics nor chart entries listed. However, you can find the lyrics on the internet. There are several music archives listed in the booklet as well.

THE GIRLS BURN WITH FIRE ON THIS REMASTERED 2 CD SET!,

This review is from: Fire: The Very Best of The Pointer Sisters (Audio CD)
This is the best Pointer Sisters retro so far, and it comes from RCA-BMG. The CD that I'm talking about is The Very best OfThe Pointer Sisters-Fire. This is a 2 CD set and starts at the beginning of their career up to their final RCA-BMG release. We got here their first recording for Atlantic "Don't Try To Take The Fifth" way back in ''72. Then comes four killers from the MCA/BlueThumb era "Yes We Can Can," "Wang Dang Doodle," "Fairytale" & "How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side)". Man, this stuff smokes! Then follows all their smashes along with a few solo recordings by June & Anita from their solo releases. They're all here! "Everybody Is A Star," " He's So Shy," "Fire," Slow Hand," & I'm So Excited". Plus many many more all time great classics by these girls! Extensive liner notes & a book full of pixs is included! A+

This collection is a great career overview of the Oakland, Ca trio (formerly a quartet). It covers their material from the Atlantic, Blue Thumb, Planet and RCA labels, focusing in mainly on their pop explosion at Planet/RCA. Richard Perry's production combined with the vocal talents of Ruth, June & Anita helped them rule the charts for much of the 1980's. Perhaps it's time to consider a boxed set with their Motown and SBK material and more solo recordings ... Although Bonnie left to pursue a solo career in the mid-70's and June has since passed away, these great songs live on. Enjoy!

All the Top 40 Hits and then some!,
By
This review is from: Fire: The Very Best of The Pointer Sisters (Audio CD)
Its easy to forget how many hits the Pointer Sisters had during their long career or to only remember a few of their more memorable hits during that time. Sitting down to "Fire - The Very Best of the Pointer Sisters" is a quick reminder not just of many hits they had (16 Top 40 hits in 13 years), but their growth as artists. "Fire" charts their career arc starting with their earliest recordings for the Atlantic label back in 1972 and follows through up to their last for the RCA label in 1986. Along the way the sisters defied preconceived notions, endured countless label changes, tried on a wide variety of musical styles, and blossomed into one of the best-loved musical acts of the era.
There's something here to please everyone, from the very soulful take on Bruce Springsteen's "Fire" (their 1978 mega-hit), to the passionate "He's So Shy" and "Slow Hand," to the exuberant "I'm So Excited" and "Neutron Dance." Included are some great forgotten hits like "American Music," "Yes We Can Can," and "Dare Me." Indeed, listening to so many great high-energy tracks I defy you not to let the rhythm get to you! All their hits are included here as are a number of bonus tracks from their solo careers (which were hits as well) and some great tracks that should have hits or could have been hits. By the time both CDs come to an end you'll be a fan and "Fire" is a testament to the Pointer Sisters talent and staying power. "Fire" is an overdue career-long survey for a group that merits another look.

This 2-cd set is to date the best demonstration of the incredibly successful career of the Pointer Sisters. There are fun songs on this cd set and touching lyrics with beautiful vocals. -IMPRESSIVE- They have recorded 18 albums and the talent demonstrated here displays exactly why record companies have continued to believe in them. I only hope we get to hear NEW music from these ladies very soon.

A few gems, but treasures Still Forgotten . . .,

The Pointer Sisters have been one of the greatest and most underated talents of this century. Their career has been a roller coaster with highs of great music to to lows of absolute garbage. Fortunately, this is the most comprehensive collection to date of their good to greatest work. There are many self-written numbers like "Fairytale" and "I'm So Excited."The harmonies of the Pointer Sisters are wonderful, unique, and a could be named a national treasure. The sisters are a vast talent that have been well used and misused. Fortunately, this compilation gives us a good overview of some of the best work they have done. But, when are we going to see some of the early works from the Pointer Sisters? Their first album on Blue Thumb was re-released. But there are great songs from the '70's that might be forever lost! Did you know that the sisters sang with the late Sylvester, Taj Mahal and Elvin Bishop? They were part of the San Francisco musical culture of the late '60's and '70's. Their work in the '80's ranged from bad to excellent, (thanks to the production of Richard Perry) but the '70's is almost all but forgotten. "Grinning In Your Face" and "Shakey Flat Blues" would be great to hear again. One day, perhaps, we will see a more complete compilation of their work for Blue Thumb, and maybe a re-release of Bonnie Pointer's solo work on Motown. Even better than that--maybe we will hear something new from these sisters, including Bonnie. Who knows? Stranger things have happened.

The pointer sisters are probably one of the most underated groups around. Although this set may be a bit much for someone who is not a big fan, this set is probably one of the most extensive collections you can find that has material covering the Pointers' wide range of material dating from the 70's-80's. And believe me, they've gone through many different styles and do each style very well, with much taste, and great harmonies. They have the type of blend that only sisters can have. With this collection you get the best of their major hits and the best of some of their less popular cuts.Besides their hits, tracks such as "Happiness", "Dreaming as One", "She's got the Fever", "The Love Too Good to Last", "Goldmine" and "He Turned Me Out" feature the sisters at their best and make this worth the buy. Enjoy!

.....party personae, and great voices. This has Ruth, June, Anita and Bonnie at thier greatest and "completest". They coulda put more from their great Planet Records/Richard Perry years (ie like that great Bacharach cut "Where Did the Time Go" since they have "The Love To Good To Last") but, hey, I ain't complaining. I luv these Sistahs...I bet they're plotting on a great revival/return CD as I speak...

I ordered this and the shorter Greatest Hits album. I know I am a bit hard of hearing, but I do expect the vocals to be of sufficient volumn that I can at least hear that the artists are actually singing.
The recordings of the majority of tracts in these albums has the vocals so low I could hardly hear their voices. And, when I did finally hear them it sounded like the mikes were in another room. Having said that, when I pumped up the volumn and could make out the songs it wasn't to bad. It seems that all the Pointer Sisters biggest hits are there with quite a few songs I never heard before. I just wish these albumns were of better technical quality. |
