Book Description

Peter Bartholomew Mysteries June 1, 1999
When five-year-old Lucy Suggs finds a human skull while playing, the residents of Nashtoba Island are horrified. Pete and Connie Bartholomew, who took Lucy in after her mother died, are even more shocked to learn that the skull was found in their marsh -- and that it was all that remained of Susan Jameson, a stunning redhead and an old flame of Pete's who disappeared fifteen years earlier. Matters only get muddier after a second skull is unearthed -- this one identified as Manny Rose, a legendary bootlegger from the 1920s.

The police are baffled by possible connections between the deaths, but they're clear about whom to pursue. As the owner of the makeshift burial ground and Susan's jilted lover, Pete tops the list of murder suspects, and suspicion spreads like wildfire to include his wife as well. Now, with a burning desire to clear himself and Connie, Pete embarks upon his own investigation, and uncovers shocking secrets, buried truths, and scandalous lies that leave him up to his neck in fire water.

More About the Author

Sally Gunning lives with her husband in Brewster on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where her roots go back over three centuries. She came to writing at a young age, driven to it in desperation one rainy day when she ran out of books. Today Gunning focuses on digging out the back story to the history that we thought we knew but didn't, and giving it a human face. She is the author of three historical novels set in New England during the tempestuous years that led up to the American Revolution: The Widow's War, Bound, and her latest - The Rebellion of Jane Clarke.

3.0 out of 5 stars leave the past behind, April 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire Water (Peter Bartholomew Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read all of the Sally Gunning books and I think they are great vacation, escapist reading. Here is my complaint: we know all about the affair that led to the divorce, we know about the problems with getting back together. The couple is back together, how about if the books stop living in the past and move forward? What does it add to the characters to relive yet another old romance? Move on, leave the past behind. Still, I would recommend the book. It is entertaining and adds a bit to the development of the characters. Now, if Gunning would just stop these peole from living in the past...

1.0 out of 5 stars Author's talents are wasted on mysteries, December 26, 2006
This review is from: Fire Water (Peter Bartholomew Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
Having just read Gunning's The Widow's War, I thought I might enjoy her mysteries. But after reading just this one, I think I'll pass. There were too many characters to keep track of; and they so lacked dimension that I didn't even want to bother. The author really is wasting her large talent for writing historical fiction if she produces more of these mysteries.
