1.0 out of 5 stars Not inspiring, despite high aspirations
This multi-ethnic group hails from San Diego and has the valiant goal of bringing the cultural fusion of Mexican-American sounds in that city into the limelight. Their songs, in English and Spanish, are all about rights, independence, and non-violence - messages you can get behind. But the lyrics themselves are too predictable to really inspire. That's not to say the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best songs in a long time!, March 2, 2008

I keep listening to the "Fire in the Youth" cd over and over again, and still can't get enough of the B-side Players. Their sound is tight and their message is righteous. Imagine: Bob Marley meets Manu Chao and invites Ozomatli to add a tasty sprinkling of Latin funk. The resulting sounds are delicious and on point. My personal favorites: "Alegria" for dancing, "Nuestras Demandas" for inspiration, and "Pleasure and Pain" for kicking back.

Their songs, in English and Spanish, are all about rights, independence, and non-violence - messages you can get behind. But the lyrics themselves are too predictable to really inspire. That's not to say the musicians aren't talented - they're just not good songwriters. For some music that will at least get your feet moving or hips shaking, try the more salsa-style tracks which emphasize musicianship over political message: El Comal (tk 4), Micaela (tk 7), and Taquerito (tk 10) all have a spicy latin edge and well worth a spin. Otherwise, you might try Unplug This Armageddon (tk 2) or Crossroads (tk 9), just don't expect them to bring about la revolución.

I've seen Bside Players grow from a local bar band in San Diego into a truly professional and artistic creation. This band, with it's 9 to sometimes 11 players, never shortchanges its audience. Their musicianship is very sophisticated and they're not afraid to mix instruments from all over the world to create a unique and multiculturally inspiring sound. They are not a "cut and paste" sound or band...for their music is not Pop, nor would you hear it in mainstream radio; but that's exactly the attraction so many fans appreciate from Bside Players, something different. They are amazing to hear live but this CD, Fire In The Youth, is so skillfully produced and mixed, Concord Records made a good move signing them, for I'm sure they wouldn't have had a problem attracting some other company. Their tracks and beats in Fire In The Youth are truly upbeat, making you want to raise your volume while you listen to it in your car. People who listen to Bside Players can't help but move and dance around like children whose hearts are free and pure from commercialization and cultural biases. Trying to classify Bside Players is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole; good luck!
Chicano conscience, globally spirited, and danceable beats are three adjectives I'd describe Fire In The Youth.
Adios.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have CD to enhance your collection and satisfy your Latino indulgences!, September 12, 2007

This review is from: Fire In The Youth (Audio CD)
These guys have been touring and playing for years. They are a crowd pleasing band. They have opened up for some of the best latin musicians in the world. Girls love them. They started in San Diego as a bunch of young guys and now people everywhere look up to them. The lyrics are deep and from the hearts of real people with real feelings about life and the world. Even if you don't speak spanish, you will still want to get up and dance to the complex beats that can only sound that good through years of practice and playing with the best. I have no doubt that these guys will continue to lift spirits and burn calories of all those who have a soul and flare for cultural uprise.

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard. The album is a upbeat and fusion of afro-beats with rasta-Mexican mixes. The messages in the songs are very thought provoking and hits home for all of our chicano brothers and sisters. Keep the grove Karlos!
