What the Critics are Saying About the OCZ ZX Series

JonnyGuru Recommended

"This power supply is a system builder's dream."
--JonnyGuru

Think Computers Recommended

"OCZ has put together a very solid power supply in the ZX Series.Talking about operation the ZX Series is extremely quiet and you can barely tell that it is on, your CPU fan will be louder than this power supply"
--Think Computers

KitGuru

"The OCZ ZX 1250W is certainly an impressive power supply and one which excelled throughout all our testing over the last couple of days. If you need a substantial supply for multiple high power demand graphics cards then this should certainly be shortlisted"
--KitGuru

Hardware Secrets

"The OCZ ZX Series 850 W can really deliver its labeled wattage at high temperatures. This power supply presents its main voltages closer to their nominal values than necessary. Noise and ripple levels were always extremely low on the +5 V and +3.3 V outputs."
--Hardware Secrets

TweakTown

"Throughout all of our tests, the ZX 850 performed quite well and exactly as advertised. Voltage readings were excellent all the way through and the ripple we saw on the 12V rail was equally impressive. Perhaps what sweetens the deal even more is the price"
--TweakTown

Harware Heaven

As we would expect for a PSU with Gold Certification the OCZ ZX Series 850W unit is a well-built product. From the flawless paintwork on the outside to the use of branded components on the inside, there is very little to fault about the PSU. A quality PSU which excels in efficiency and low noise operation.

I bought this with alot of reservation knowing that on many forums these PSU are infamous for being riddled with problems. Mine however works perfectly I've owned it for a few months now and decided it was time to give it a good review that it deserves. I've been really stressing this PSU unit since I had it and its handled everything so well. Really a great experience for me.

Pros:
-Price. I bought this item for $179, I'm not sure if it was on sale or if the price was a mistake, but I bought two and wish I had bought four!
-Fully modular
-Big beefy cables, well labeled.
-Runs cool and quiet even under constant heavy load (3x Radeon 6950 running a distributed computing project under full load 24/7)

Cons:
-I should have bought more of them when I had the chance :P

Other thoughts:
If you ca get a good price on one of these, buy it. It will run whatever you want.

UPDATE: over 2.5 years using this OCZ PSU and not one single problem!!!!

$180 from Amazon for this PSU is a steal. Not to mention, a mail-in rebate to boot. Compare it at $239 at Newegg. 1250-watt, 80+ GOLD certified. WOW. It is a special order item from Amazon, so it took ruight at two weeks to receive it. Absolutely sero problems installing it. Cables could be a little longer -- I bought an extension for the 4+4 Pin CPU connector so that I could run it behind the motherboard in my Antec DF-35 mid-size case.

I had always been an Antec-only PSU guy, but getting an 80+ gold certified 1250-watt PSU from a respectable company like OCZ for $180 +mail-in rebate sold me.

5 stars! This PSU has been working flawlessly for about a month and I couldn't be happier!

I got the 1250 after 2 tries of returns and a couple weeks of shipping and returning but Nonetheless Amazon works with you to make this as painless as possible.

The power supply is working smooth even in a tight quartered htpc. Very Quiet and cables are pretty solid. Wish they had the Subscribe & Save feature on this product =P ...

it is by far the most valuable 850W psu in 80plus gold. at first i thought the price is ok but wait there is no rebate at all. straight pricing, no painful rebate. NICE. I immediately put into the cart.

really love the full modular feature, save a lot of space for those cable i don't need. all the cable length is just the way i need it.
install it and run smoothly. nothing else i can say, a psu that do the job and cheap!!

WARNING!

I went to the OCZ official web site www.ocztechnologies.com, and not a single mention of power supplies! - Did this in my search for a replacement fan for the 1000W supply I had.

It strongly suggests that OCZ is NO LONGER PRODUCING POWER SUPPLIES! If that is the case, there is no reason to purchase the product if it is NO LONGER supported by the manufacturer.

If someone could clarify this, and prove me wrong, PLEASE DO!

Thanks!

I have owned this product since Oct 25, 2013. In the 13 months since purchase, here are the results of almost 24x7 usage:

PROS:
1) Power remains constant.
2) No identifiable anomalies to device components as a result of the product.

CONS
1) Shortly after purchase, the fan began to rattle - loudly. It has not let up.

CONCLUSION:
If I'd been smart enough, and with sufficient time available, I would have returned the product for a replacement unit. This simply because of the 'noise factor'. It is quite loud, and because of this, I know that it will significantly lower the life of the product.

Does that sour me on OCZ? Not at all. Every thing made by man has the potential to fail or partially fail at some point. I just didn't expect this to happen, and at a point I was so pressed for time. Lessons learned.

Wish I could return the product now and get a quiet unit, but that opportunity is long gone. :(

Excellent price, excellent power output (which leaves room for expansion down the road), excellent modular cable system. One big con - hence the 3 star rating - FAN WHINE. The PSU whines while under heavy load, especially when I'm stressing my GPU. The quality is unmistakable and everything about the product is solid; however, the whine can get annoying. I've discovered that this whine can be reduced by plugging your PC directly into a wall outlet and not into a power strip/surge protector. If it's not plugged directly into an outlet, power ripples will occur and the unit will whine quite heavily.

I can recommend the PSU, just be aware of the massive requirements of this unit and how to mitigate the whining issue if it arises.

Edit: Fan whine has increased significantly. I've isolated the problem specifically to the PSU (originally I thought it may have been the fan coolers on the GPU itself) or the CPU fan. The whine is so loud and annoying that it's literally impossible to ignore. I'm looking into my RMA options but it may be too late.

Final recommendation: Go with Corsair. I went with this power supply due to its high power output and price but skimped and will end up paying much more. If RMA doesn't work out, I'm going Corsair.
