Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This sequel to Elemental (2012) is quickly paced and jam-packed with action. Thomas and his friends are on the hunt for a new island to call home after battling pirates, the unknown terrors of the outside world, and sometimes themselves on Roanoke Island. Thomas’ newly discovered element comes in handy now as well as bolsters his previously flagging self-esteem. When the small band of hardy, desperate adventurers discovers a colony of people living on another island, hope flares until suspicious events threaten to tear apart the group of friends like nothing has yet. John realistically weaves dystopian elements into what could be a future America, using familiar settings and creating past situations that believably lead into Thomas’ story. The truth behind the division between elementals and nonelementals lingers throughout the story, finally revealing itself and creating even more plot twists to urge the characters along. A strong follow-up to an unusual, interesting postapocalyptic world dusted with just enough romantic and paranormal traces to attract a wider readership. Grades 7-10. --Julie Trevelyan

More About the Author

Antony John was born in England and raised on a balanced diet of fish and chips, obscure British comedies, and ABBA's Greatest Hits. In a fit of teenage rebellion, he decided to pursue a career in classical music, culminating in a BA from Oxford University and a PhD from Duke University. Along the way, he worked as an ice cream seller on a freezing English beach, a tour guide in the Netherlands, a chauffeur in Switzerland, a barista in Seattle, and a university professor. Writing by night, he spends his days as a stay-at-home dad--the only job that allows him to wear his favorite pair of sweatpants all the time. He lives in St. Louis with his family.

"Firebrand" is the fast-paced sequel to "Elemental" which unfolds at Fort Sumter where Thomas, his friends and the Guardians seek sanctuary after their escape from Roanoke Island. What they will find is disturbing as they grapple with lies, threats and a dangerous secret that could bring death to them all. This is a dystopian story filled with non-stop action, thrills and adventure with a dash of romance and mystery.

Using Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour, South Carolina as a backdrop for the story is a fascinating bit of ingenuity. Being isolated and defensible in the first battle of the civil war makes it a perfect location for a colony of refugees seeking safety from an infestation of rats who carry the plague. Ironically not guns but a man's stupidity will undermine its security.

The plot is well-written,the characters realistic , their personalities developing as events unfold and the action heats up. Thomas, an innate leader develops with the story line. He's brave, considerate, and shrewd as he struggles to overcome the prejudice of Rose's mother, and to discern the truth or deception in the Chief's supposed friendship. Alice haunted by her father's violence is strong-willed, competitive, loyal, trustworthy, and finds a kindred spirit in Jerren. Nyla like Rose is determined and steadfast. Both are willing to sacrifice their safety to protect those they love. Even the antagonists are memorable, like Chief, the deceptive leader whose lies and cruelty outweigh any good intentions, and Kell, the tough, no-nonsense second-in-command with a killer instinct.

I enjoyed this young adult dystopian novel with its hint of mystery; the meaning behind the word CROATOAN and the Guardians history still to be resolved. Although, I thought the elemental abilities of the characters were underplayed as was the seriousness of the plague. But, I can't wait to see what Antony John has in-store for Thomas and his friends in the next book

OMG! as good as the first one! Thank you John for not dissapointing me.

You know how you read a book and then the next in the series is kind of just okay? Well, Firebrand wasn't okay, it was perfect.

This second book kept the same just-about-right pace of the first one.

I would have liked a cast of characters just so I could had remembered who was who, but John did a great job reminding us of who each character was in the previous book without being repetitive.

The action was paced as the first one: not too much as to make me roll my eyes (will they get a break?), but not to slow as to bore me.

I absolutely loved the second book in the series and I'm going to stalk the author (again) to find out when the third book is coming.

Thomas has become the unwitting leader of their small group. The adults have been cowed for their deception. And when they arrive at Fort Sumter, the Chief takes Thomas under his wing and treats him as almost an equal. But it soon becomes apparent that he’s hiding something sinister.

Firebrand is the second installment in the Elementals series. Blending post-apocalyptic fiction and fantasy, this series is dark and unpredictable. There is plenty of mystery, suspense, danger, and intrigue – making this sequel just as exciting as the first. The characters and story are captivating. The novel was impossible to put down. And with another mild cliffhanger ending, I’m left eager for the next in the series.

Ever wonder what happened to that lost settlement in Roanoke? Well, wonder no longer. Thom leads the survivors from the first book to Fort Sumpter, where another group of refugees is holding out. The catch? They can no longer use their elements here. Have they found a new home? Is it worth the sacrifice? And most importantly, WHY do they have elements in the first place? Can't wait for the third installment.

I read the first book, Elemental and got hooked. It has action and adventure, as well as a sprinkle of romance. I have Skyped with Antony John, and he's a cool guy (with an awesome British accent). I will be watching for Book 3!
