Editorial Reviews

Cartoon Network is on FIRE with the new Firebreather Blu-ray. Firebreather, Cartoon Network's first world premiere original CGI movie event, delivers fierce action in the clash of two worlds where dragons roam the Earth and past secrets are exposed. At the center of it all, teenager Duncan struggles to find his place as half-Kaiju and half-human. Based on the comic book series by Phil Hester and Andy Kuhn, Firebreather, is directed by Peter Chung (Aeon Flux). This Blu-ray is hotter than ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Awesome, Original, Great Music, and FUN! July 30, 2011
By RT
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
The quality of the graphics, sound, and music are extremely well done. The storyline is fairly unique and features several nice "surprise" events. But best of all, my two boys ages 8 and 6 absolutely love watching it as does their Dad :) It really is a rarity that such a one-off made for TV computer animated movie is this good. I coudln't be happier!

Now, bring out the sequals/series already! The ending of the story definitely foreshadows of something in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie! May 23, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I love animation and I love this one. I thought this movie was made brilliantly and it was the kind of superhero movie that worked great in CGI format. Superhero animation should be done in CGI just like this. I'm glad cartoon network decided to do this in this format.

4.0 out of 5 stars A for an original effort August 26, 2013
Format:DVD
The Cartoon Network's computer animated movie FireBreather is a fairly original story dealing with the growing pains, including being abandoned by one's father, of a unique boy (the offspring of a human mother and a giant Godzilla-sized kaiju--don't ask, the movie won't tell) with special powers and abilities whose father comes back into his life at one of the most inopportune times: high school.

Duncan Rosenblatt has moved often and is a...weirdo, an outcast, which has as much to do with his orange SPF hue and his scales as it does his distrustful attitude. But like any normal red-blooded American teen he has eyes for the pretty cool girl and through a series of misadventures, including being confronted by his monstrous father in a mesa Arizona type setting, becomes the hero and gets the girl. But he has to battle and survive some literally big competition as he helps avoid the monster-human apocalypse that comes close to being unleashed.

This movie was created for the Godzilla & "Pacific Rim" crowds. There's plenty of fantasy and mayhem for action enthusiasts and the angst of the outsider who is able to stick it to the jock (think Peter Parker frustrating a Flash Thompson) this short film feature is finely attuned to teenage boys. I personally wouldn't spend $20 on it but it's fine entertainment for $10 and under.

In a pattern that has repeated too many times for him to have hope in a different outcome, 16-year-old Duncan Rosenblatt is beginning his first day at a brand new high school. Despite his mother's attempted encouragement, he KNOWS that it's hopeless:

His skin is bright orange.
He eats coal for lunch.

In addition there are the famous family members he'd rather people didn't know about. Sixteen years ago his insanely brave mother, Margaret Rosenblatt, saved the world by stopping mankind's war with the Kaiju, essentially the city destroying giant monsters that for some reason always seem to start with Tokyo.

Duncan's father? Oh, he's Belloc, the 120-foot-tall, fire breathing, King of the Kaiju....

Exactly how that worked is not explained. Duncan's Mom OFFERS to explain it to him, but Duncan would really rather not know. However, it does appear to have involved true love that later died, perhaps because of irreconcilable differences over how to raise the child: Margaret wants him to go to college; Belloc wants him to rule the Kaiju (and by extension the World).

Still, given those gloomy prospects, things don't go THAT badly on his first day. Duncan (literally) runs into the hottest girl in school, attracts the attentions of another girl who happens to be a Kaiju fangirl, protects a smaller kid from a bunch of bullies, makes enemies of said bullies and leads them a merry chase (because he promised his mother not to get into any fights on his first day), and accidentally manifests a new talent:

fire breathing.

Oh well, it could have been worse. Unfortunately, it is about to GET worse....

"Daddy" is back in town.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little film August 19, 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Caught this on Cartoon Network a few years back and was pleasantly surprised. For a made-for-TV animated movie, the quality of this film was surprisingly high. The animated was really well done, the story was interesting, and the characters (with the exception of a very flat love interest) were all incredibly interesting.

If you like animation, I'd urge you to check this out.
