Kids and Parents Will Love It!,
By Denise Ramirez (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Firefighter George & Fire Engines, Fire Trucks, and Fire Safety, Volume One [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My preschooler has several videos about firefighting. Most of them include at least one of the following: irritating slapstick humor, talking dogs, goofy kids, horrible songs, a miscast actor claiming to be a fireman, or a ridiculous storyline that distracts youngsters from whatever factoids about the subject are being thrown at them. "Firefigher George" is not like this at all. This video is like a really successful field trip to a fire station. In it enthusiatic adults explain how a pumper engine works and go over the basics of fire saftey. Believe me, that's enough to keep your junior firefighter enthralled. What the makers of other videos don't seem to realize is that firefighting is interesting enough: all the jokes, etc. are not needed. I think "Firefighter George" was produced by people who know a bit about primary education. The information in the video is presented in a coherent, accessible way and the visual aid on the video box really gets my son and nephews involved in the experience. Adults will learn a lot too. Yes, you can watch this one with the kids and not cringe. I hope to see videos on other subjects by this company.

This video is energetic, attention-getting & utterly informative. I, as a parent, learned so much from this tape on the technical aspects of a fire fighter's job. We have since ordered Volume 2. A really great thing happened today at Wal-Mart. My son & I spotted a fire truck outside & later saw the fire fighters inside. My son said hello & started to report what he had learned from the video. They offered him a job (he's 4!) & subsequently invited him to visit their fire station. He was thrilled! A great, informative video for both kids & adults!

An excellent video for children. It is not only informative but very entertaining and keeps the attention of children of all ages. Uses not only adults as characters but also uses children as characters. As a teacher, I have used this video in my classroom as both a learning tool and for entertainment. An excellent video to use in the classroom!

Nice video, really nice company!,

My mother-in-law purchased this video (and volume 2) for my 3 yr. old son and it quickly became one of his favorites. Unfortunately, the tape we received had a very annoying, crackly static noise throughout the whole thing. While it didn't bother my son in the slightest, it gave the rest of us a headache (Volume 2 was fine, however). I looked up the company's website and got their customer service number and called about getting a replacement. Skip, their customer service guy, called me back right away and kept following up until he reached me. He took my and address and immediately sent out a new, flawless copy of the tape. My son watches these tapes regularly and seems to really like knowing how the various hoses and pumps connect together and work (and is now very excited to be able to point out firefighting equipment he sees in commercial buildings); and I can't help but appreciate the fire safety they teach throughout the videos. Volume 2 features "Maggie the Firedog", much to my son's delight. Our poor, patient dalmatian now gets renamed "Maggie" for days at a time. This isn't something I would have normally purchased myself, but it's been a great gift!

Pretty cool video,

Great video. They go to pretty good lengths to show each piece of equipment and then they slide the word in underneath in text to show how to spell the equipment - I like this education side of the video. My 2 year old was glued to the set for the first 25 minutes. And they have a female firefighter and other young girls in the video so it is for both sexes. After 25 minutes the video runs some credits, but then kicks back up again for another 15 minutes of more equipment for the older kids. The neatest thing about this video is that the video sleeve opens up into a board book with pictures of all the equipment and their names. My daughter loves for me to "read" her this "book" as she points out the equipment. I have never seen a video do that before. Pretty high quality, and a ton of fire engine scenes with the lights and sirens.

Grandmother of Many,

Our grandbabies love it! Our just turned 2 year old granddaughter is glued to the screen while our 4 year old grandson loves the equipment board book the video comes with. It was a pleasure to finally find something to occupy their time for a little while when they visit us. It is amazing, as it actually has taught us old folks all about fire equipment as well. In addition, we like the fact we are educating our grandchildren in fire safety! Though all the sirens can be a tad loud every now and then, but the children seem to love these scenes the most. I would recommend this to everyone who is concerned about what their children or grandchildren are watching on the television today.

My 2 year old just adores this video. The pacing is good, the language very concrete, and there are lots of exciting shots of fire trucks with sirens blazing. Very developmentally appropriate for the 2-6 age group. This company really knows how to make safety information accessible to children without scaring them or being a downer. My son goes around quoting Firefighter George, and even tells me what to say to a 911 dispatcher! It gets a bit slow at the end when there a lengthy interview with a fire marshal, but overall this is a terrific product.

Its unfortunate but my son loves this video. He constantly asks to watch it during our tv time and I've tried everything to mix it up a bit but this is always his choice. Vol 2 just arrived today. At least I get to watch something different now.

I bought this video for my then 2 year old who was firefighter crazy. We own all the ones in the series and after 2 years they are still the favorites. He is now 4 and still loves to watch them. If you are only to buy one or two this one and blue angels airplane one are the best.
Thank you firefighter George! You've provided hours of educational joy - and make for some quiet car trips.

I bought this for my 4 year old who is obssessed with firefighters. Like every 4 year old, he asks a million questions a day. This video answers all questions fire engine related. He recites the facts back to me throughout the day. I found it interesting too(the FIRST time I watched it!). Was debating about buying volume 2 at the same time I bought the first one. Figured I would see how it was first. Save yourself the double shipping fee and buy them both. Vol 1 is about the pumper truck, Vol 2 is about the hook and ladder. We're waiting for vol. 2 in the mail now. Every well rounded jr. firefighter should know about both!
