We have been baking at high heat recently -- roasting vegetables in a cast iron pan, baking pizzas, etc., cranking the oven up to 450-550 degrees. One of our traditional oven mitts needed to be replaced because the insulation was worn out, developing a "hot spot" that was dangerous.

While traditional potholders are likely more than adequate for the task, if you've ever tried to take a cast iron bread pan out of the oven and turn out a loaf of sourdough bread onto a cooling rack wearing oven mitts, you would appreciate how difficult this task can be. The big "thumb" on an oven mitt can get in the way. There is simply not enough dexterity when wearing a mitten.

These gloves are really nice. The fact that they put the silicon on both sides of each glove is a huge plus. If they did not do this you would have to worry about which was the left and which was the right glove. But because both sides of the glove are identical, they are "reversible" (not in the sense of being able to turn them inside out, but in the sense of being able to turn the glove over so that the thumb is on the correct side).

I have fairly large hands, as does my wife. The gloves fit nicely with some room to spare. They are fairly snug around the forearm. Last night I took out the cast iron pizza skillet and did not feel any warmth. However, I cannot really say that I tried holding the skillet for any longer than was necessary, and at 500 degrees, I really did not want to put it anywhere besides on top of the stove, which I did nicely. Again, the form fitting glove made it easier not to touch my food accidentally whereas an oven mitt might touch the crust. It was very easy to grab the handles and get a secure grip.

I purchased the redesigned "Grill Heat Aid" oven gloves, with the extra long cuffs (size: Large to X-Large) during their new product launch ($19.97 for the pair). The gloves fit extremely well and I like the fact that they are snug and ambidextrous (my hands measure just over 8 1/2" around the knuckles). The high temperature rating (662° F) in conjunction with the extra long cuffs makes the original "lOve Glove" obsolete. The seller states that the "Grill Heat Aid" gloves are constructed of Kevlar® aramid fibers (for strength) and Nomex® fibers (for flame resistance/thermal protection) and are similar in construction to the gloves that I used during my time with my local volunteer fire department. The silicone non-slip coating is nice for handling glass cookware. I highly recommend using these gloves while you are exposed to most high heat sources (Stovetop, baking, frying, BBQ, campfire, making moonshine, changing light bulbs or for the work shop - though they're not for cutting or welding). Obviously burns are serious and these gloves offer cheap insurance. Seriously, if you're looking for the best for around the house (for under $20.00) this is it... period! I am in no way affiliated with the manufacturer or seller and have not been compensated for this honest review.

When choosing between the normal & extra-long cuff, I thought, "Hey, why not get more material and more protection for the same cost?" Well, here are 2 reasons NOT to do that:

1) The longer cuff just makes the glove harder to quickly throw on and off.
2) The standard version cuffs are already plenty long and these aren't that much longer.

I was replacing an original 'Ove' Glove that just wasn't cutting it any more. The cuffs on that glove are perfect, coming right to the mid-wrist (just barely covers a watch). Unfortunately the heat protection sucks and it only came as one glove, hence the upgrade to these. Now the normal version of these cuffs are ~1.5" longer than that, which cause them to not go on quite so easily, and feel long already. With the extra-long cuffs, they are another ~1.5" longer and since the normal ones already feel long, I really don't get much difference between the two pairs. Please see the attached comparison photos for yourself.

If it was a difference of 3" (the normal cuffs being 1.5" shorter than they are), I would have understood the purpose of this version of the gloves much better. As is, I don't feel they differentiate enough and now instead of having two pairs of gloves that each serve their own purpose, I have two pairs of gloves that are more or less the same. So unless you really need that extra 1.5" protection on your forearms for some reason, I would grab the normal version which is a decent compromise between ease of use and extra forearm protection.

After using these the past few weeks all I can say is...Awesome. I've always hated how all other kitchen gloves were in a mitt or simple fold over configuration. Those shapes may work most of the time, but are always prone to bunching up and/or slipping at the wrong time. A full glove all but eliminates that problem. Add the heat resistant material to the glove shape and what's not to like? I've used it mainly for pizza steel that you heat up to 550+ F. I transfer it from the bottom to the top rack after heating (weighs 22 lbs) and these gloves handle it with ease. I can barely feel any heat getting though. The long arms are great for reaching into the oven as well. I have smaller hands and bought the small size. They fit just right. A good combination of dexterity without being too tight to cause worries of heat transfer to skin right up against the material. Great product!
