Kindergarten-Grade 3-The firefighters who pull the Christmas Eve shift are surprised when a red-suited fireman whose badge reads "Zero North" visits them. While the visitor is getting comfortable, an alarm sounds and the men rush off to save a burning furniture store. On their return, they find that Ol' Sergeant Nick left presents for everyone, including a shiny new pumper. Another takeoff on Clement C. Moore's Christmas standard, this picture book reads awkwardly and haltingly. Some of the rhymes are stilted and forced and the plot lacks imagination. Sketchy pen-and-ink and watercolor artwork accompanies the first-person text.-I. A.
