Book Description

Fireflies, although set in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, could readily take place in a bellicose situation anywhere in the world. It contains an expos of the chasm between generations, between rich and poor, between materialism and idealism. This novel has a socioeconomic/psychological relevance that leaves the reader pondering the consequences of war and the nugatory effects of imposing status quo values on adolescents who are in search of their own truth, their raison d'tre. The story centers on the lives of two adolescents from opposite levels of society whose redemption lies in their short-lived mutual love, which ends tragically.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Fireflies is a very powerful novel, one that could be usefully put on the syllabus of several kinds of courses. We have a course in The Political Novel, for which Matute's antiwar, anti-Fascist text would be very appropriate. As a novel presented so much through the eye of the young heroine Sol, the book would also be a good choice for Women's Studies courses in literature. It would fit extremely well into the reading list of courses in Peace Studies. If, as is planned, the Comparative Literature Program offers first-year seminars in years to come, one is quite likely to be on the topic of war and peace--for which Matute's book, in English, would be an excellent choice. I congratulate Glafyra Ennis on translating such a gripping and multidimensional text." -- Ann Rosalind Jones, Esther Cloudman Dunn Professor of Comparative Literature, and Director, Comparative Literature Program, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts

"In her excellent translation of Fireflies, Glafyra Ennis captures faithfully the expressive, lyrical style of Matute, an outstanding modern writer who deserves to be better known outside of the Spanish-speaking world." -- Phoebe Ann Porter, Ph.D., Literary translator, and Lecturer, Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts

"It is laudable that Fireflies is being made available for the English-speaking public, as it encapsulates much of the most powerful essence of Ana Mara Matute's own wartime experience, her own discovery of the injustices of Spanish social structure, and her characteristic message of social justice." -- Janet Prez, Associate Dean and Horn Professor of Spanish, Texas Tech University, Graduate School, Lubbock, Texas
