Splendidly Soft Music with a Touch of Sadness, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Fireflies in the Garden [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Javier Navarrete, the composer of Pan's Labyrinth, proves to once again be a composer to watch. Fireflies in the Garden, albeit on the short side, features a strong but softly emotional melody as played by the piano, strings, and other instruments. The melody is the first thing you hear in the first track of this album, and with those first few notes I was captured.
Without knowing the story of the movie, I can say that this soundtrack does very well as a standalone. I was reminded of George Winston's tone and rhythm on his slower, more bittersweet songs. There are no surprises on this album, making it a very well-flowing arrangement. It does not feature the more intense action that Pan's Labyrinth did, but it still sports the simplicity of the beautiful lullaby from that album.
All in all, if you adore the piano and enjoy George Winston, I recommend picking up this album. It is also available with English inserts. My only point of dissatisfaction is that while the melody is very beautiful, there isn't as much variety on the rest of the album. It functions well as a very simply but well-composed soundtrack.
