Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Hawes's first-person narrative is a revision of the 1963 edition (HarperCollins). Alexander uses richly hued pastels for her illustrations of a young girl, her grandparents' farm, and the creatures of a summer night. While visiting the farm, the girl learns some interesting facts about fireflies from her grandfather. The colorful drawings and appealing cover represent the major changes in the book; the original edition featured a young boy. The brief, clearly written text is thorough enough to satisfy its intended audience. Julie Brinckloe's Fireflies! (Macmillan, 1985), for the same age group, is a softly illustrated, very readable story of a young boy catching fireflies with his friends at dusk. Joanne Ryder's Fireflies! (HarperCollins, 1977) is by far the most informative easy-reader on the life cycle of this unusual insect. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

5.0 out of 5 stars Fireflies in the Night, April 7, 2004
By
This review is from: Fireflies in the Night: Revised Edition (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1) (Paperback)
This book is about a young girl who visits who grandparents during the summer. Her grandparents live on a farm and know a lot about fireflies including how to catch and how to handle them. The young girl learns some interesting facts about the fireflies and how people in other countries use the light that fireflies provide. The grandfather explains how fireflies make their light; as well as the different light signals that males and females produce. This book can make readers eager to finish the page they are on, so that they can turn to the next page and learn another fascinating fact. It is a splendid introduction to fireflies!

I also recently purchase the fireflies in a jar and this book is a good supplement to that. My preschool kids will now understand all about fireflies.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Firefies in the Night", February 22, 2008
By
This review is from: Fireflies in the Night: Revised Edition (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1) (Paperback)
The book "Fireflies in the Night" was a good introduction to beginning science for pre-schoolers because it uses a familiar phenomenon, the firefly, to teach about the concept of cool light as opposed to warm light. It was simply written to inform and not overly complex for the pre-schooler it was intended for, who is a curious 4-year old girl. She lives in Southern California and wanted to know about fireflies, which are not ordinarilly found where she lives.

There are other books listed on the back cover which appeal to the young and curious scientist and are also worthwhile.

The book arrived in tact and on time to present to my 4-year old granddaughter who is very inquisitive and loved receiving it and learning something new.
