The plot quickly drew me in. One of the many things I liked about this book was the development of not only the main characters but of the secondary ones as well. While certain characters had smaller parts, I felt as if I knew them. This is not a good versus evil paranormal story; it is a story filled with the goodness of the Whelan family. Fireflies is an excellent read and appropriate for middle school, young adults, and adults.

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but the cover of Fireflies drew me in. Then I stayed because I was hooked! I enjoyed the story of this Irish family in America. The characters are developed well and their backstories are shared at the perfect time.
I liked the characters and at the end of the book I wanted to know what happened to them. To me, this is a sign of a good book!
I like paranormal fiction - it's my favorite genre. Fireflies is the latest addition to my collection. I hope the author writes quickly, because I want to read more!

I have just finished reading Fireflies and all I can say is it kept me so interested I had a hard time putting it down. It was a wonderful book about a little boy with a gift that his family had a hard time comprehending but loving him so much that they did everything to try and understand what their little 6 yr old Ennis was going through. They were a loving Irish family that did your heart good. I can't wait for the next book to be publish. God Bless you Peggy S Bartlett and thank you for writing a wonderful book.

"Fireflies" is an engaging novel with very likable characters that kept me turning the pages long after my bedtime. The stories within the story of an Irish family who came to America keep you interested throughout and will leave you thinking long after you've reached "The End".
I thoroughly enjoyed this author's first book and will definitely look for her second!

As I read this novel I found myself being transported into a time far away,
yet very comfortable as I was drawn into the family Whelan. I could imagine
being part of that family and with each turn of the page I was part of that
family. I could imagine a little boy with the gifts of Ennis and feel his
comfort in having the gifts as well as the angst of his family as they worried
about him. I worried about him. As a first time novelist, Ms. Bartlett seems to
have a gift and I will look forward to more novels written by her as it can only get
better with experience.

Fireflies by PS Bartlett is an enchanting story of the close-knit Whelan family, coming to terms with their unusual youngest member.

First Paragraph:

"Ennis found a bird. He stood like a fence post, straight and still and about half as tall, cupping the small brown sparrow between his chubby palms and looking down in sorrow. Its feathers were softer than he had imagined and it didn't try to peck him or escape as he'd expected. Its tiny talons scratched him lightly and tickled his skin. Its dark blank eyes stared open, yet its body didn't move."

PLOT

Set in the tiny village of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in the late nineteenth century, an Irish family's life is about to change. A big family, Owen and Sarah support their seven children, Fagan, Connell, Liffey, Teagan, Brogan, Patrick and Ennis.

Ennis was always an unusual baby, starting with his birth. He didn't cry out for many minutes after the delivery, and his parents feared the worst. Six years later, they cherish their little miracle, but being to notice he has a mature temperament far beyond his years.

The other children are growing up too, and the oldest will be leaving the nest any day now. Fagan is enchanted with a young woman down the street, and the two girls (Teagan and Liffey) are becoming women- finally noticing the men around them. But Teagan is ahead of the times. Her father is a doctor and she desperately wants to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, this is the era where genders have their specific roles. Men go out and work, women take care of the homestead and children. Teagan will have none of it.

However, her dreams are the last thing on her mind when Ennis begins to act strangely. First the bird- which Teagan was sure was dead.

Format: Paperback
Irish immigrants, Dr. Owen Whelan and his wife Sarah have seven bright and expressive children. Their youngest child Ennis is very unique; born very frail and near death he survived, yet always seemed to have an unearthly aura around him. However unusual Ennis Whelan had been for the first six years of his life, the day he found a bird, held it in his hands, then let fly away; the same bird his older sister Teagan swore was dead and was preparing to bury, did the degree of his strangeness began to unfold.

Teagan became increasingly suspicious of Ennis' odd behavior but their mother dismissed her claims; that is until Ennis started healing people. However, when Ennis innocently questions his father about sad visions of Owen's past, including his voyage to America in 1844, Owen knew he'd have to share those tragic memories and the secrets of his past - fully realizing he had no choice as Ennis' life would depend on it.

*** Again, a new author and a debut book - and my, oh my, what a rare and precious gift. Naturally, I can usually sense from a description whether I'll find the book to my liking, but when it simply grabs me with graceful writing and characters I want to grab and hug, then I quickly realize I've been blessed once more by the `book reading angel'. In fact that just might be the biggest hint as to where this novel will lead you in a very emotional and sweet way.

Naturally, FIREFLIES is more than Ennis' story, though the better portion of it seems to point that way, but it truly is so much more. While Ennis is central to the story there are other elements of both Owen and Sarah's pasts that have a huge impact on the finale which I totally didn't see coming! And oh my, what a finale it turns out to be! NOTE: You will need a box of tissue handy.
