Book Description

April 1, 2003 5 and up
A robin cheerfully greets the day at dawn.

A horse nibbles grass under the heat of the midday sun.

A rabbit stands still, disappearing into the grass at dusk.

As evening falls, a frog tells the world that he's the king of the pond.

During one summer day, these and other creatures tell their tales, celebrating their ordinary -- but extraordinary -- lives in verse. Young readers will be entranced by the many voices created by renowned poet Marilyn Singer. They will be encouraged to look more closely at the surprising world around them -- morning, noon, and night.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 4-From a robin's impressively cheerful greeting to the dawn through a mole's dreamy thoughts and unhurried sleep at the end of night, Singer's poems give glimpses into the lives of several creatures during one summer day. The various rhythms and unique "voices" masterfully capture the nature of the beasts, from the otter's playful insouciance ("It starts with the slide/with the mud/with the ride/Then the splash/and the dip/and the flip/and the glide") to the frog's lordly calm ("baron I'm the baron/I'm the duke/I'm the king/of this piece of the pond"). Each spread contains a verse opposite an illustration of the featured animal in its environment. Robbins's "photographic treatments" use full-color, graphically enhanced photos and photo collage for an almost painterly effect. These portraits perfectly echo the tone of the poems as subjects soar, hide, flit, and sit. Similar in tone to the author's Turtle in July (Macmillan, 1989), this book is well suited for storytime and quiet sharing as well as for units on animals and poetry.

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. "It starts with the slide / with the mud / with the ride. / Then the splash / and the dip / and the flip / and the glide." Like this poem that mimics the wrestling, skidding action of otter play, the selections in Singer's latest collection are filled with the sense and sound of their animal subjects. In one poem, a frog belches and swaggers in his delusions of grandeur: "baron I'm the baron / I'm the duke / I'm the king." There's information about the animals subtly imbedded in many poems, such as these lines that follow the darting motion of a hunting bat: "I hear / I see / in waves of sound . . . I fly I find / I near / I seize." Robbins' grainy, computer-generated, color-photo collages are often more garish and blurry than effective; a picture of a mole is particularly indistinct. But Singer cleverly imagines the voices and personalities of familiar animals in exuberant lines that children will want to hear or read, and then shout out loud. Gillian Engberg
