Book Description

August 15, 2011
Bright lights flicker in the dark evenings of summer. Pinpoints of hope float against the black descent of night. The sweetest of small and innocent creatures finds its way through the shadows. Fireflies seem to dance on sheer air, illuminating the space between heartbeats.

Children give off a similar brave glow, despite the challenges of their young lives. The lessons of childhood are often painful, the shedding of fragile wings in the gloam of an uncertain future. These rich novellas are small jewels reflecting the essence of what it means to grow up dancing among the shadows of life, carrying a brave, small beacon because you know that even the brightest days always, always, end in darkness.

Childhood can be so sweetly sad and sadly sweet, profound and deceptively easy to categorize, yet poignant to remember.

New York Times bestselling novelist Sarah Addison Allen (GARDEN SPELLS, SUGAR QUEEN, THE PEACH KEEPER) anchors THE FIREFLY DANCE with her wistful and funny novella about Louise, a North Carolina girl whose keen observations of the lives around her weaves an unforgettable spell with just a hint of everyday magic.

Phyllis Schieber's Sonya, a child of Holocaust survivors, is confronted with the responsibilities of her legacy when she has a poignant encounter with a classmate, another child of survivors, and her mother, in a local shop in their 1970's New York neighborhood.

Kathryn Magendie's Petey deals wryly with her family's move from the cool blue mountains of North Carolina to the hot flatlands of Texas.

Augusta Trobaugh's stoic Georgia girl leads us through her surreal encounter with a mysterious backwoods toddler who turns out to be anything but ordinary.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little sugar, a little spice., December 19, 2011

I liked the variety of voices & stories in this anthology, although Kat Magendie's was my favorite. If you like a book with a little bit of everything, you'll enjoy FIREFLY DANCE. The stories are reflective of the title -- when one voice goes out, another lights up.

Nice gift for the readers on your list!

I have an interest in Kathryn Magendie's writings and chose to read this book of novellas. Her story of Petey and her family's journey from the mountains of North Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in order for her father to find work to support his family is a delightful story. Magendie does an excellent job of revealing the sorrow and confusion of Petey and her little brother Hill in leaving their beautiful home in North Carolina to live in a "half-house" in Baton Rouge which was smaller than their home in North Carolina and needed a lot of love and "updating". Their life became more interesting after they met their neighbor downstairs who helped Petey and Hill's mother to recover from her depression after a miscarriage of her second son. Magendie bears the souls of these children as only she can. I was a little disappointed also at some of the other "short stories" in the book and thought the other writers should have developed their stories better.

Fireflies on a soft, summer evening can set our mind on a journey of reflection on times past. That is exactly the feeling I had traveling from one story to another by these talented authors.

From the softness of subtle magic to a startling, loving vision of faith... from difficult life changes that eventually bring us to a better, happier time... and an awakening to others' past sorrow and a changing from care-receiver to care-giver, this journey is well worth your time.

I have made note of the authors of this fine collection, and will look for their individual work.
