Book Description

Book One in the Firefly Hollow Series

In 1960, a tragic death in the family calls young Sarah Browning back from college to her Appalachian homestead. Unable to return to school and finish her degree, she finds herself facing a future that isn’t what she’d planned. Lost and grieving, she wanders onto her reclusive neighbor’s property where she stumbles across the all-too-attractive Owen Campbell, a man hiding secrets she’d only ever thought were legend.

Owen Campbell was raised on the folklore of Eastern Kentucky, tales of men and women with magical abilities from shape-shifting to healing powers. Rejected by those he loves because of his own abilities, he isolates himself from the world. When he meets Sarah, he’s faced with the tough decision of whether to let her in or stay hidden away to keep his heart safe.

Firefly Hollow is the first book in the "Firefly Hollow" series. Other titles include Butterfly Lane, Dragonfly Creek, Cattail Ridge, and Cricket Cove. Also by this author: the Shadows/Leroy Collection, a series of novels set in small-town Indiana. Titles include Secrets in the Shadows, Under the Moon's Shadow, Shadows from the Grave, Hidden in the Shadows, In the Heart's Shadow, and Deception in the Shadows.

3.0 out of 5 stars Firefly Hollow book 1 September 7, 2013
Format:Paperback
3.5 stars

I'm not sure why but when I picked up Firefly Hollow I was expecting to read a contemporary romance so I was quite surprised to find that it was set in the 1950s - 1960s and also contained characters who were shapeshifters. That isn't a complaint, I'm just mentioning it so that people know what they're getting when they pick up the story. As much as I'd classify this as paranormal romance because of the shapeshifters it actually reads more like one of those historical sagas that follows a family for several generations which was something I really liked about it. The story has a lazy feel to it, it kind of meanders through the lives of the main characters and allows us to really get to know them both as we see them in their best and worst moments. It also places a lot of focus on the rural setting and I felt it captured the innocence of the time period really well. I think because of the way it is written it will appeal not just to paranormal fans but also to lovers of historical or contemporary romance.

Owen has spent years isolating himself from the community, he doesn't believe that he is worthy of love or that anyone would be able to accept him for who he really is so he pushes the outside world away and remains secluded on his family's land. I really loved Owen, he was so sweet and protective, not just of Sarah but also towards his family, and he knows how to write the most beautiful love letters! He is a shy man but when you break through his shell you'll find someone who is kind, polite and who has a lot of love to share.

5.0 out of 5 stars Firefly Hollow- October 11, 2012
By Kendra
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is my first review so bare with me :) I normally don't read love stories but this one had the romantic ideas as well as the paranormal feel to it.

Firefly Hollow is a great love story set in 1960's Kentucky. Owen Campbell is a mysterious brooding "hermit" who doesn't want anything to do with people except for them to leave him alone. Then you have Sarah Browning who leaves her family home to be the first one to go to college. Through unfortunate events Sarah comes back home and thats where her and Owen's stories begin to entertwine. By the end of this book you feel as though you were on this journey with Owen and Sarah. I felt butterflies when Sarah did and I was anxious and angry when Owen was. T.L. Haddix takes you on a journey that makes it extremely difficult to put down. Cannot WAIT for the sequel!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tender story with a paranormal twist July 13, 2013
Format:Paperback
In Appalachia there are folk tales about shape shifters, among other legends. This story explores the shape shifter legends and how it impacts human relationships.

Owen Campbell has been a shape shifter since adolescence, an inherited trait that destroyed his relationship with his father, who never understood his condition. Out of love, his mother sends him to an uncle who is also a shifter, so that he can learn to control his gift.

Sarah Jane Browning loved to escape to the woods between Owen's home and her own, burying her teenage angst and misery near a beautiful pond. She and Owen don't meet in that wood, at least not that she knows of.

When I first started reading this story, having it start with a humiliated Sarah as a teenage high school student, I thought maybe this book would be more young adult/teen fiction. But during the early coarse of the novel Sarah grows up. The time frame is late 1950s to 1960s. It is told in third person point of view, but only from two points of view - Sarah's and Owen's. These POVs are skillfully intertwined and Haddix weaves a beautiful story that actually made me shed more than a few tears.

This grabbed my attention and my heart from the opening chapter. I can't wait to read the second book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book November 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved, loved, loved this book. It's set in the mid to late 50's which I thought I wouldn't like but I was wrong. It was a much more innocent time and the romance is just so much more pure because of it. Being a paranormal romance I expected the story to be a lot more "out there" but it just blends in with the story. The way the main characters deal with the knowledge makes it easy to suspend disbelief for the reader. I think this book is pretty special because it's unique to the genre. I will definitely look into reading the next books in the Firefly Hollow series. I received this book from Net Galley as an ARC for an honest review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet but not quite spicy enough for me... January 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Disclaimer: this book is set in the 1950’s-60’s and the romance builds according to what was socially acceptable at the time. So you have to be prepared for a sweet slow build people. Also it really is romance with a hint of paranormal – not at all like typical paranormal romance.

Sarah is a girl who lives and loves with a calm, sweet sort of grace. She dreams of being a teacher and finds solace in the pond on her neighbor’s property. Owen is a recluse who hides a world of talent and a heart of gold behind the walls of his mountain home. He’s had too much rejection in his life to open up to others. Especially those with the power to hurt him, like Sarah Jane Browning, the beautiful girl next door.

When the two meet under unusual circumstances, Owen makes an effort to keep himself closed off from the effects of Sarah’s charm. SO… will Owen learn to open his heart and give love a chance, or will he be a total guy and bungle it by getting scared and being a jackass? I guess you’ll have to read to find out.

All in all, nothing explodes in this book. By that I mean, there are no action sequences, no ass-kicking, and literally no one blowing things up. For me, that was a downer but if you like a love story more along the lines of Nicholas Sparks, you’ll probably enjoy this. If you’re looking for a shifter story with a little more magic and classic shifter shenanigans, it may not be for you.

Don’t get me wrong – if I had an Owen of my very own I would hug him and pet him and squeeze him…and pat him and rub him and caress him... mmmm hmmmm.

I tore through this book. I laughed, I cried, I said “awwww”, and at the end I thought “alright I think its time for some J. R. Ward now”. I guess Owen was just a little too sweet for me. ☺

More About the Author

T.L. Haddix was born in Hazard, Kentucky, a small town in the center of the Appalachian coal fields. Taught to read by her grandmother, T.L. has had a life-long love affair with books, devouring whatever she could get her hands on. From childhood favorites such as the Trixie Belden series and Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books, to her current favorites from authors like Tami Hoag, Alex Kava, J.A. Jance and Lisa Kleypas (among many others), T.L. still finds refuge in the written word.

"Growing up, I wanted to be everything - astronaut, police officer, doctor, teacher, reporter, psychologist - there was no clear choice for me. I wanted to do it all. Becoming a writer has allowed me to do just that, because I can live vicariously through my characters."

A resident of southern Indiana, T.L. is hard at work on her next book, when she isn't chasing after her three cat-children with her husband.
