5.0 out of 5 stars Baby's First Reference Book, May 29, 2004
This review is from: In the Firefly Night (Who Comes Out?) (Board book)
This is an outstanding little board book. Each page is about an animal and has a drawing of at least one, with its young, in their natural environment. There are also a few facts about each animal ("A bat has a special type of hearing to find its way in the dark.") that can help satisfy (and encourage) curiosity. Not so much to overwhelm little ones, but a couple of interesting things that little kids will remember. There is a picture index of the different animals around the edge of the book. This allows you and your child to go directly to the animal you want to see. A+ for education and teaching early reference skills!

But of course it has to be fun - the drawings are lovely and the boardbook is fun to chew on. My son likes the little round lumpy circles on the edge of the book (someday he will learn they are useful for more than just teething, but I'm glad he can appreciate it now too!) they also make it easy for him to open.

As a librarian, and mother of an 8 month old baby, I am so happy that my little one has this in his first library. It is already well slobbered, but I know that as he grows older he will continue to enjoy it and it will help me as I teach him how to learn about the world around him. What a shame that it is out of print - hopefully not for long!
