Season 2: Still awesome, July 28, 2009
A genre all its own, Firefly is a mixed motif, part Western and part sci-fi. The first two episodes of this disc really capture the thrust of this series, an action packed space ride that somehow has a "Young Guns II in outer space"-aura. The last two episodes on this disc truly provide laughs and love developing the series and allowing viewers to invest themselves in some great characters.
EPISODE 1 - Shindig
When Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) finds business amongst intergalactic bourgeouis, he crashes an elite party - with his mechanic Kaylee Frye (Jewel Staite) doing her best Little Bo Peep impersonation - to which the gorgeous companion Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin) is already accompanying a privileged and pompous man who has paid for her services. The proverbial bull in a China shop, Reynolds takes little time to offend Serra's aristocratic customer, and in no time they are entangled in a formal sword fight resembling ye olden times.
EPISODE 2 - Safe
Continuing where "Shindig" left off, the crew lands on a far-off planet that is a Tombstone facsimile. Mere moments after River (Summer Glau) fires off in an alien version of Tourette's (I think gordan = The F-Bomb), she wanders off into a medieval minstrel show complete with dancing of the never-ending twirl variety. A minor subplot of this episode involves the budding romance between Kaylee and Dr. Simon Tam (Sean Maher), where his refined upbringing sometimes clashes with her version of spaceship hillbilly moistness. With an abduction, a gun battle, a near death, and a religious Joan of Arc flavor, this episode is full of action.
EPISODE 3 - Our Mrs. Reynolds
Starting with a hold up, a gun fight, a hoe down, and a bonfire, this is the most Western of all episodes on this disc. When an antiquated ceremony produces a betrothal and a seemingly naïve stowaway, the crew of the Serenity faces a foe with hidden talents. Particularly funny, there are several laugh out loud moments in this one; and if this series had shown on Cinemax, this would definitely have had some serious sex scenes. This one's naughty.
EPISODE 4 - Jaynestown
On a planet known for selling mud bricks built on the backs of slave-labor, Jayne (Adam Baldwin) finds himself the center of attention, Inara finds a virginal client, and an entire town sings songs in memory of an act rivaling only that of Robin Hood. This episode is deep in morals and absolutely hilarious at the same time. I laughed hard watching this one.
Similar to the first disc, the second Firefly disc is brilliant. It's impeccably acted, well written, and completely enthralling. The special effects are competent and the action is spaced perfectly throughout. It's witty, touching, and could even be considered a time period drama in an odd way. And the more I see her, the more Morena Baccarin ends up looking like a sexier Hispanic version of Ashley Judd. Once again I'm baffled how Fox could be so stupid to have cancelled this series, and the person responsible should be fired.
