I know, these aren't the kind of thing that will make your child smarter, more confident, or clean their room. But it if puts a smile on their face and makes them happy for awhile, isn't it still great?

My 7 year old daughter saw one at a friend's house and was fascinated by it. So when we found them at Lowes (for $15) it seemed like a reasonable price for a bunch of smiles. We actually picked up a couple (different colors) so that we had some in our stash for birthday presents for friends.

It looks like an ordinary mason jar. Inside is a happy looking (it has a painted face) little firefly that is discreetly attached to the lid by a wire. When you tap on the lid the firefly lights up and flits around the jar making little tapping noises on the glass. Sometimes it stops and just flaps its wings while its light slowly burns on and off. It is realistic enough to make you think of a warm summer night but 'cute' enough to remind you that you don't have a real firefly inside trying desperately to get out.

It turns itself off and is powered by two AA batteries in the lid (it comes with them).

We like the pink and green (really a neon yellow-green) lights best. A unique gift and fun item that will have your child (and you) smiling quickly.

Just got this and I spent about an hour watching it, even though I purchased it for my grandson's birthday. The firefly jiggles, flits around, waggles its body, and the light fades in and out. When it is flitting in the jar it makes a clinking sound which adds to the magic rather than detract from it. The only concern would be about the real glass jar-- kids need to be supervised or very careful when they hold it. If it kept me entertained for an hour just think what the kids will be doing!

I love the way this looks so realistic in the dark! My cat and dog sit for hours and watch this. I am not sure who loves it more me or the animals!

We bought this for our 9 year old daughter. While she did think it was cool, it did not hold her interest for very long. I think this is a great gift for anyone who loves bugs, but if your child is not easily entertained, then it's best to avoid this product. That being said, I really enjoyed tapping on this jar to watch the bug on a wire. Yes, this means I'm easily entertained! This was the biggest hit with our 6 month old child though. She is absolutely fascinated by it.

One, it only works 30 or so seconds at a time. You have to keep tapping the lid to wake up the firefly. Gets annoying really fast. I'm ok with the timer, so it conserves the batteries, but 30 seconds is too short.

Two the wire to which the firefly is attached to, is too clearly visible. The movement of the bug is really good but that wire kills the illusion. White, or maybe a clear, stiff fishing line type of a thing would have been better. It would still need the thinner wires for the light, but the main one, that transfers the motion, can be hidden more.

Three, motor is very noise and also kills the illusion.

Its ok, the concept is good and pretty and you can't really blame them for the wire since its the base of the design, but the noisy motor and short operating timer definitely took away a couple of stars.
