Editorial Reviews

Star/director Clint Eastwood wields weaponry, commands troops and triggers soaring suspense and adventure in two popular action hits. The Cold War heats up when war-haunted pilot Eastwood slips inside the Soviet Union to steal the mind-controlled high-tech fighter called Firefox. And he's a semper fi lifer who whips raw Marine recruits into shape and leads them into the invasion of Grenada in Heartbreak Ridge. A science-fiction spectacular and a character-driven study of a warrior at a peacetime crossroads: it's a dynamite double feature from one of cinema's most beloved stars and acclaimed filmmakers.

Please describe the audio and video quality of any Blu-Ray you review. Thanks to those who do this.

Both movies have DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtracks, which are very good.

Video quality varied throughout the movies. Firefox started out very good, and had a lot of very good parts, but some parts were grainy. The flying scenes at the end were, unfortunately, grainy. Heartbreak Ridge also had some very good parts, and some grainy parts. Video quality in these two movies wasn't great, but mostly good.

Overall, these are pretty good movies, and I'm not terribly disappointed with the video quality. I'm satisfied with this purchase.

I have always been a huge fan of Firefox, lumping it in with Hunt for Red October for my "superior Russian tech we must steal" flicks. I was surprised at out crisp the blu-ray transfer is and really enjoyed watching it for the first time in a few years.

The sound design/mix is of particular interest to me - the soundscape they engineered for this film is exceptional. At no time during the plane visual effects sequences do you feel like you are listening to a post-produced "mix" - it registers as very real for me, which is great because the model effects don't always hold up as I would like them to.

Great price point and two movies to boot (still have to check out Heartbreak Ridge). Enjoy!

I'm happy to report that the somewhat misleading use of the term "2 movie set", while true, is less informative than '2 Disc Set'. Yes indeed this is a 2 disc set, not '1' as widely speculated prior to release (also shown as '1 disc' on Amazon's product page).

As for the Firefox movie it's a great movie and so is Heartbreak Ridge. It's better quality over the old copy I have and as for the sound well let's just say it's not really 5.1DDS. It's better than the original 2chnl dvd with better picture quality. So yes it is better..! If your that much of a stickler for sound and picture quality then don't buy this. But if you want better than vhs or old dvd then buy it and I bet you'll like it over the old original old stuff.
I love these movies and Firefox was a great movie and still is..

Firefox with it's awful special effects deserves a remake or at least a pass with today's special effects, but holds up as a great Cloak and Dagger flick full of sacrifice and intrigue that climatically ends in dog fight. There are some very cool moments in this film although I could have done without the flash backs.

Heartbreak Ridge is a campy Full Metal Jacket that doesn't even deserve that comparison. Eastwood plays a gunnery sargent that has to adjust to the changes in his beloved marine core and take on one last fight with this new platoon.

Unfortunately, most of Clint Eastwood's films transferred to Blu Ray have been disappointments in the area of video and audio quality. The version of Heartbreak Ridge in the 35 Years Collection was horrible with many dropouts, video stalls and artifacts. Firefox was not even included in that collection. There are already a great many reviews here providing a summary of the plots, opinions on acting, etc. Therefore, this review will only focus upon the actual quality of the transfers to Blu Ray.
Keep in mind that the quality of what you see and hear also depends upon the quality of TV monitor you are using and its accompanying home theater processor and speakers. I have a pretty high end, esoteric system and am judging the Blu Ray off of that.

Good to know that both of these films come on two separate discs so compressing two movies onto one disc is not an issue. I think when I review each film separately, you will notice some redundancy in my observations.

VIDEO QUALITY....
I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised by the transfer to Blu Ray. The video was clean throughout with no artifacts, no dirt nor dropouts. There was some noticeable grain which really could only be seen during the sky scenes and the jet flights. The grain was not really there in the close up and indoor scenes. Coloration was pretty decent and warmly colored with a slight over coloration on skin tones. It strongly appears to me that they crushed the blacks during many of the scenes blocking out small detailing. While the blacks go fairly deep, IMO, they crushed them too much. Mbps rate generally averaged in the mid twenties.

AUDIO QUALITY....

To me, Firefox is one of the best film Clint Eastwood ever acted in (besides the Man with No Name series). The filming, actings and plots are all of very high standard (Heartbreak Ridge is slightly below par as compared with).

Both films transcribed very well into Blu-ray and the price of such nice combination is very acceptable.

Strongly recommended for all CE's fans.

The movie "Firefox" alone is worth the price. It has whatever you like; thrills, action, suspense, intrigue - the whole enchilada. It qualifies as one of my "best." Having the second film is icing on the cake. "Heartbreak Ridge" is not as good but it holds up and is worth watching. If you are an Eastwood fan, this is whoopee time.
