Book Description

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire-
And she’s igniting!

Like all children of well-meaning parents, Gina was raised under the impression she could be anything she wanted to be when she grew up. Her choice to become a firefighter lit the spark, fueled by discrimination and her own determination, which created a backdraft in its wake. This is the story of one woman's journey of braving the flames, to ultimately rising from the ashes, finding her own empowerment in a man’s world. Join her on her journey as she not only changes a system but also shares her process of becoming a firegal, a force that is inextinguishable!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for women that want to heal August 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A must read for women who want to heal any adversity in their lives! I found the book informative, poignant and overall, very loving. Like other reviewers, I found the writer to be very unbiased and focused on her healing instead of the events that brought her to the writing! Enjoy the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Journey through the Fire August 15, 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is for those in non-traditional careers, individuals seeking to improve managerial skills, leaders, those engaged in self-discovery and self-improvement, and women. It is heartwarming, honest, and raw. Hall fully exposes her fears and doubts as well as her desires and joys, merging emotion with fact. Her stories about firefighting are fantastically gripping and her stories about discrimination are eye-popping.

Hall recognizes there are no clear answers to dealing with difficult issues while illustrating the of pain of victimization, the process of changing ones' circumstances, and the costs of those changes. Her intentions--sincere and honorable--have truly helped pave the way for minorities in non-traditional roles.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fire Within April 23, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
From bookkeeper to EMT to firefighter to battalion chief. Firegal is an inspirational account of one woman’s struggle to make her bones in a male-dominated world and the obstacles and challenges she encountered along the way.

Many years ago I had a conversation about women in a man’s world with a female hotel general manager. Her perspective in meeting challenges summed it up well – “I never saw myself as a victim.” I’ve concluded that every woman who has been successful operating in a man’s world has one thing in common – they never put themselves out there as victims. Geldbach-Hall is no exception and supports that conclusion. She dealt with challenges head on and found sources of strength in other women, including Rosa Parks and her own mother. What’s more, she encourages us to reach deep down inside ourselves and discover our own inner resources we may not have known we had.

From a stylistic point, I liked her use of quotations at the beginning of each chapter and her humorous descriptions (“he reminded me of someone you would see in a cigar ad…who could use the heads of small children to extinguish his smoldering embers”, “the chief looked at me as if I had killed his dog…,” which added a little comic relief to an otherwise intense subject.

The take-away from Geldbach-Hall’s story is to keep on keeping on.

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring read! October 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a well-written account of one woman's battle against the unjust policies of the fire department that she worked for and the personal demons that she had to exorcise along the way. The insight that she shares, along with the struggles along her journey at the fire department, were invaluable. I also loved the way that she told her anecdotes about the various experiences that she had. In particular, I thought that she selected the perfect quotes for her chapters, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars firegirl September 20, 2012
By pmmogg
Format:Paperback
Back in the late 70's, I was also a woman in a man's world.. i was the same age as gina when i joined the air force; young, impressionable and had never been away from home on my own. When i experienced discrimination i did not know how to handle it, and though I looked the other way it kept happening over and over again. For Gina to come forward and put herself on the line at this tender age and pursue a lawsuit against one of the biggest giants in the industry is amazing in itself. But she did not stop there. No, she blazed a path for the women behind her so that they would not have to deal with discrimination. Not only did she write an amazing book, she teaches us all valuable lessons in compassion, forgiveness and perserverence. Having met Gina, I know that she is an amazing woman who i am honored to call my friend. Thank you gina for the path you have carved out for each and every woman following in your footsteps..

5.0 out of 5 stars Firegal- Rising From The Ashes August 22, 2012
By VK
Format:Paperback
In Firegal, Geldbach - Hall reveals her successes and heartbreaks in the male dominated field of firefighting. The author shares the pitfalls and difficulties of initiating change and gives inspiration and advice to others embarking on such a journey. While she may have withheld some of the details of the stories of injustices she experienced, she didn't negate her feelings about those incidences. She offers encouragement to those who may be discouraged in their daily life and/or work environment and gives hope that they can successfully work through their own demons both real and perceived.
Empowering read!

1.0 out of 5 stars Sailor or Firegal?
I couldn't get very far into the book because of the offensive language. I've read stories about Sailors and didn't have to 'hear' such language.
