Product Description

Fireplaces are energy losers! Researchers have determined that an open damper on an unused fireplace in a well-insulated house can raise overall heating energy consumption by 30%! The Fireplace Draftstopper is an energy-saving device for the fireplace. Why Does a Home With a Fireplace Have Higher Heating Bills? Hot air rises! The fireplace is like a giant straw - sucking your heated air from your house. This is like leaving a large window open all winter long! The Solution - Install a Fireplace Draftstopper! Most fireplaces have dampers designed to prevent both cold downdrafts and space heating losses. These damper plates however provide little help after the fireplace has had a few roaring hot fires which cause the metal plates to warp and become misaligned. Many gas fireplaces are not even provided with a damper! The solution is to install a fireplace plug. The Fireplace Draftstopper a unique product that has been designed to be a removable plug for the fireplace. The Fireplace Draftstopper is an inflatable urethane pillow measuring 16" diameter. It is quickly and easily installed in the fireplace just below the damper. The Draftstopper seals the fireplace to an effective 95-98% seal. It can be adapted to work in almost all fireplaces. It is the easiest and most inexpensive way to stop valuable warm air from leaving your home and minimizing drafts from your fireplace. It can pay for itself in just 1 heating bill! Heavy, thick, durable pillow will last many years. Designed for quick, easy, CLEAN, installation and removal. Featured on Good Morning America and HGTV! Order one for each of your fireplaces today!

If you need a product to remove/install frequently based on fireplace use this is likely not the best product for your needs.

Before I bought this plug I thought it was kind of strange that other people either loved it or said it didn't work. I see now why that is. If you have a fireplace that has a damper handle sticking down into the fireplace below the damper (like mine) you do not want this plug because it wont work. The handle will get in the way. Fortunately, i bought it from Home depot so i was able to return it.

The package says "can be used in any fireplace" but it is not possible for it to seal if you have a damper handle in the way. I am going to try the different type of chimney balloon that goes in above the damper, or I might just stuff the damper with fiberglass.

Purchased both sizes of the draftstopper. Neither size would fit my oblong shaped fireplace.
SOLUTION: PURCHASED 20 DOLLARS WORTH OF DOUBLE FACED INSULATION. STUFFED FIREPLACE (HAD PLENTY LEFT OVER) STUFFED BLACK TRASH BAG INTO OPENING TO COVER INSULATION ADDING SEAL AND DISGUISING INSULATION. TOOK 10 MINUTES AND SAVED 37 DOLLARS. SHOULD SAVE HUNDREDS THIS YEAR ON LOST HEAT AND AIR CONDITIONING. WISH I HAD THOUGHT OF THIS YEARS AGO. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS GIMMICK.

I have a zero-clearance firebox so I bought the small pillow as recommended on the maker's website. They say that it "fits any metal or zero-clearance fireplace with a round damper" but it sure doesn't fit my fireplace.

Their installation picture shows it going below the round part of the chimney pipe, but it doesn't seal at the corners since that part of the fireplace isn't round (at least mine isn't). I tried shoving it up into the damper itself but the handle isn't long enough to prop anywhere and then I couldn't reach it to inflate it anyway.

It's better than nothing, but overall it was a disappointing purchase. I bought it elsewhere and can't return it, either (although since you inflate it manually by blowing into it, I'm glad they don't take returns - I really don't want a used one!).

Update: While the balloon doesn't fit very well and was a hassle to put in, it definitely is making a difference. Overnight lows have been near freezing but my living room is a lot warmer than it would have been without it. It's still a little drafty, but it's just a draft and not wind funneling down the chimney like it was pre-Draftstopper.

The product is too large to fit the diameter of my chimney pipe. Also, even using the shortest rod length possible, it is still too tall for my fireplace. The product is advertised as fitting "any zero-clearance fireplace". Based on this and the other similar negative reviews, this is clearly not the case.

In hindsight I feel extremely foolish ordering this when a strip of R30 fiberglass insulation provides a better plug for the chimney at a small fraction of the price.

I was skeptical when I ordered this item but I'm glad I did. The room use to get cooler the closer you got to the fireplace; the temperature was 5 - 8 degrees cooler than any other room in the house. Now, the room temperature is consistent and barely 2 - 3 degrees cooler than any other room (vaulted ceiling, 15 ft on the high end & 8 ft on the low end, with 2 vents on the lower end near the fireplace).

I thought I chose the wrong item because my fireplace is shallow and the dampener is recessed. It took a couple of days to figure out how to make it work in my fireplace. The balloon cannot be position properly when fully inflated. So I positioned it so one of the bulges inflates up into the recessed dampener. Since then, it's worked like a charm! The glass doors are no longer ice cold and I don't feel a draft (even when it's really windy outside) blowing out of the fireplace.

I've recommended this product to friends who have draft problems with their fireplace.

This didn't really work for me. I couldn't completely seal off the flue pipe. A towel worked better for me.

my fireplace damper got jammed open, and replacement parts were not available.

This makes for a good seal, and is easy to install/remove for using the fireplace. One thing to note is to make VERY sure that the fireplace is cooled sufficiently. I didn't wait long enough one night, and the stick melted down a bit (it still is long enough for my application, luckily)

The seller shipped it VERY fast and was very easy to deal with!

I knew that I had some draft issues around my fireplace box and that our damper didn't close 100%. My current solution was that lovely retail store plastic film to seal the drafts. I was hoping to have a product that would eliminate my needs for this plastic wrap. Based on reviewing two different manufacturer's products, websites, installation videos, and reviews I ordered this circular product. I improperly assumed it went up beyond the damper into our round chimney flue rather than how it actually went around the damper in the fireplace box. Regardless, this product is still sealing the noticeable drafts around our damper/flue, but the square variety would have likely be a better decision for my construction. The hardest part was installation. It took me at least 4 times to get a proper seal around our damper handle. The hose to inflate the product could have been a bit longer so I didn't need to stick my head/body in the fireplace, but I was able to make it work. You need to work slowly and carefully and reposition the product appropriately as you inflate to make certain that you don't puncture/scratch the plastic as while it is a thicker mil I assume it isn't puncture proof. The manufacturer indicated that there is no replacement/warranty so don't puncture this product. Once installed I still had drafts coming from around my fireplace box excluding the damper/flue area and a better selection for my personal home needs would have been to invest a chimney cap up on top to seal the entire fireplace off rather than an inflatable plug, but that isn't this product's fault. If you need a product to remove/install frequently based on fireplace use this is likely not the best product for your needs.
