5.0 out of 5 stars The most underrated band EVER! March 9, 2003
Format:Audio CD
It is such a shame that this brilliant band were (and still are) so unfairly overlooked.
Formed from the ashes of the Undertones, they rose like an indie/pop phoenix well before Oasis and Blur etc. hit the scene and became mega successful! This album is their last and my favourite. Every song is a gem; the catchiness of 'Detonate My Dreams', the heaviness of 'Catch A Fire', the great riff of 'Last of the True Believers', the simply great song-writing on 'Infinate Thrill', 'Speed of Light', 'Shangri-La' and of course the rest of the album! This band were so original for their time; they were writing guitar-pop in the mid 80s when synth was king and they got no recognition but split before the music they pioneered became popular. They are respected by bands such as Radiohead, R.E.M, Sonic Youth, U2, Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Their influence is still audible today in many bands who cross indie with dance, rock and pop but they unfortunately STILL remain unsung a good 10 years later! Do this band a favour and buy this record along with Chemicrazy, Babble, Manic Pop Thrill and Final Flame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Going out on top June 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I just listened to this CD again for the first time in a couple of years, and wow, I had always loved it, but it was just one of those moments where you could hear it "as new" again and I just got so caught up in enjoying was just a special moment. This was That Petrol Emotion's last studio release before they disbanded, and they definitely went out on top (well actually, get the CD "The Final Flame" from the two last live concerts they performed before breaking up in the 1990s--that is TRULY going out on top!). It's a shame that a band so great just never made the breakthrough--they certainly deserved to, and their material holds up well. I love, love, love all of their CDs (even the lamented "End of the Milennium..." which many hardcore fans seem to enjoy panning--I just disagree, it's also great). I had the good fortune to see the Petrols twice, and both concerts were among the best I've ever seen, among hundreds of concerts. Steve Mack had one of the greatest rock voices ever and could sing like few others I've heard. And as for Fireproof, it starts great, ends great, and has a lot of great moments in between (and a small amount of filler). If you've never heard the Petrols before, by all means buy this. But I will say, of the Petrols' five studio CDs, my favorite is still "Chemicrazy," although this is a close second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great last Album January 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Great last album of a band that never got attention in the US and the sales in the UK. Any other review that doesn't rate this band as 5* is just igorant of what makes for great alterative music. Yes that you" Truman Fischer"....

2.0 out of 5 stars "Fireproof" August 30, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I didn't particularly like this record, but I can tell it was made by people that definitely know what they're doing. My hat is off to them regarding the nice, thick production. This is a solid, white guy rock album, with few flaws when heard in that context. These guys are confident players, without being flashy. The songwriting and arranging is precise and coherent, in fact they even approach greatness with the track "Heartbeat Mosaic". Overall, it's excellently done, just not my cup of tea.
