Book Description

Casey Cleburne is the descendant of the great Confederate General, Patrick Cleburne. Beautiful and intelligent, she’s a single mom with two boys working as the personal assistant for the newly-elected President of the United States.

Enter Secret Service agent Phillip Henry “Colt” Sheridan IV, the descendant of the renowned Union General, Phil Sheridan – enormous, handsome and brilliant, Colt has earned himself the nickname of “The Anti-Christ” in the ranks of the secret service for his intimidating persona and no-nonsense tactics. Colt is newly assigned as President Talbot’s Special Agent in Charge and when the descendants of two great Civil War generals meet face to face for the first time in the halls of the West Wing, sparks fly as the woman the president fondly calls “The General” clashes with the man known as The Anti-Christ.

But the sparks swiftly turn into genuine interest, and Casey and Colt soon find themselves enveloped in a powerful romance. Danger and intrigue lie below the surface, however – although Colt is indeed a Secret Service agent, he is also a double agent for a rogue government branch called The Core. The Core is privy to information that the new president has conducted illegal activities in the past and Colt has been carefully positioned in the president’s entourage to uncover enough evidence to impeach the man. Colt’s directive is to use anyone he can to accomplish this task and he has been specifically ordered to get close to Casey. Although Colt tries to keep his feelings a bay, he quickly falls in love with the beautiful woman, muddling his drive to complete his mission as he realizes he can’t hurt her and he can’t use her. Complicating the issue is the fact that the president becomes a personal friend to both Colt and Casey, and soon Colt is resisting his mission altogether. The Core, however, is full of maverick agents and vicious assassins, and they threaten Casey’s when they realize Colt has lost his focus to destroy the president. To protect both Casey and the president, Colt offers a final solution to The Core that could see him sacrificing his own life for the safety of those he loves.

Though sickness and danger, intrigue and peace, death eventually touches the lives of all concerned, but it doesn’t end the true love of Colt and Casey. Their love story transcends the ages.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total ripoff! March 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am so annoyed about this book and this author who has, it seems, deliberately set out to deceive when it comes to this book and indeed this series. I enjoy mysteries and romantic suspense with alpha type heroes. The first book in this series seemed to be just that (Sea of Dreams) The second that I read seemed to be romantic suspense but it did have some paranormal aspects which affected my enjoyment of what would have been a good book(Purgatory). This book, unlike what the blurb seemed to describe, is a futuristic paranormal ghost story that I have no interest in whatsoever. This seems to be a quite deliberate attempt to deceive readers as it is part of the so called American Heroes series and the blurb says nothing about ghosts, futuristic or paranormal elements. I know that there are people who like these story elements and that's great-for them. Meanwhile I wasted money and time on this story. I will NEVER waste money on this author again and I consider either the author or someone involved with the description of the book's wording to have conned me out of money I could have used to buy a book I would like.LATE NOTE: On 3/26/13 the author contacted me and offered a refund which I took her up on. Although I stand by my comments regarding the accuracy of identifying genres in book blurbs, I think the author's gesture was classy and I thank her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern-day history July 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a history teacher and a fan of "The West Wing", this book was perfect summer reading. An intelligent mix of Civil War heritage, intrigue, single Mom struggles, romance, and a touch of a conspiracy theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story October 22, 2012
By Sierra
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Le Veque's medieval stories are my favorites, but Fires of Autumn was definitely a great story and a treat to read. Again, Le Veque has the talent of creating an interesting plot, intertwined with intrigue and wonderful characters. Le Veque has a way with creating characters, both main and minor, that stay with you and the situations that they encounter... just tug at your heart.

However, I don't know if I'm totally happy with the way it ends. It's just that you can't help but love Casey and Colt and what they felt about each other and what they went through... and.. well, you'll just have to read it yourself... read through all the happy times, fun times, and even the sad parts to get to the end... of a great story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get a box of tissues ready!! July 17, 2012

I normally do not read modern romances but this was free and I have enjoyed other books by this author so I decided to give it a shot and all I can say is WOW!

VERY romantic, you cannot help but fall in love with the hero or heroine. I was sucked in to their world from the very beginning. You will definitely need some tissues handy for the ending! Highly recommend this one for all romance readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great read! April 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love to read, but only a few authors truly give more than you expect. Janet Evanovich makes me laugh put loud. I love her. Nora Roberts (J.D. Robb) writes so well that I delay finishing her books just for the ongoing connection I have for the characters. I also love Sue Grafton's mysteries. I am adding Kathryn Le Veque to my list. I just finished Fires of Autumn. It's been years, maybe, since I actually cried over a book. This is a story so threaded with intrigue and betrayal in Washington politics that you hope it couldn't happen, but you have a sneaking suspicion that it does. The love story that weaves its way through all the drama is one you know will last into eternity. Heart and soul, mystery and politics, and American heroes, Fires of Autumn has it all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Future love story March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoy Kathryn LeVeque's American Heroes series. This one was interesting from lots of perspectives especially placing the action in the future and spanning the lifetime of the heroine. All the characters and the plot were well developed, believable, and poignant. Once I researched this author, it was clear that her background in writing historical romances strengthened her ability to translate the themes to the present day. Great read that stays with you for a while.

The love between Colt and Casey was so true and so deep and I was not prepared for the end, I didn't read the earlier reviews so it surprised me and I could not stop the tears.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Love that transend.... February 5, 2013
By Linda
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had a hard time with this book, not because it was bad.... not at all, it very good. Anyone who reads alot of Romance novels, wheither they are mixed with adventure, intrige, or just plain silliness.... the bottom line is you want a happy ending. But sometimes the 'happy ending' doesn't always come packaged the way we think it should. I am not a professional reviewer and my opinion is just opinion. Ms. Le Veque made me stretch this time out of my comfort zone. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to see what we would all like to see be the ultimate true love. But folks you're going to have to read the book to find out what I mean. Trust me that there is a sexy, all man kinda hero, a really strong beautiful lead lady, and plenty of the mushy stuff. But it breaks your heart in places too.... it a real tear jerker....... but oh my ..... so worth the tears. Read the whole book and enjoy it... I did. Oh course I love Kathryn.
