Editorial Reviews

Since its original publication in 1611, the King James Bible has had immeasurable influence on religion, language, culture, art, and literature yet its road to influence and acceptance was paved with darkness. International politics, subversion, lust, and bloodshed set the stage for the heroic heretics; who sought to translate the word of God into the English vernacular. Fires of Faith crisscrosses a tumultuous Europe at the birth of religious freedom and chronicles characters central to the Reformation, including John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, King Henry VIII, and Bloody Queen Mary I, culminating with the reign of King James I and his commissioned translation of the Bible. This intriguing three-part documentary series features more than 130 reenactments filmed in eight countries, with great care taken to represent the scenes visually and historically accurate. Commentary from 18 international scholars and religious leaders tells the story of one of the greatest committee efforts in history, resulting in the most influential and enduring book the Western world has ever seen. Part 1 - Yearning for the Word Discover the history of the English Reformation and learn about the varying roles Martin Luther, William Tyndale, and King Henry VIII had in its development. Part 2 - Martyrs for a Book Gutenberg's revolutionary printing press aided the Protestant Reformation and sped up the printing of illegal Bibles being smuggled into England. Within a year, many influential heretics were betrayed, imprisoned, and martyred for their beliefs. Part 3 - The King James Bible In 1604, England's King James ordered a new translation of the Bible. After seven years, 54 scholars, and one of the greatest committee efforts in history, those who persevered brought forth the most widely used book ever written. I enjoyed this series. I consider myself a well-versed Christian and I learned so much about this translation of the book I read daily. I highly recommend this if you want to learn more about the favorite English translation.

This is a very educational and interesting DVD. We watched it for about an hour each night and even our eight year old son found it interesting.

Fires of Faith is really well done and shed a lot of light on how hard it was to get the Bible translated into English and the challenges early protestants faced in reforming the church. highly recommend it!

What a terrific introduction to bible study! No one should try to make a serious attempt to study The Bible without understanding the times and the cultures from which it - and its various compilations and translations - arose. I am grateful for the KJV which has never been surpassed for its literary excellence, in my opinion. In fact, it might be the only thing in the history of the world accomplished by a committee that is worthy of enduring. It takes awhile to become familiar with 17th century English, but the reward is worth the effort for those who are willing. This film provides an excellent historical background. The acting is terrific and the commentators do an excellent job as well. This one is highly recommended.

Films about bibles are generally pretty stodgy, but this is a well-made, historically accurate, entertaining and theoretically enlightening telling not only of how the King James Bible came through fire and hell to exist, but of the horrors of intolerance in general. Religion has traditionally inspired as much friction and violence as it attempted to correct, and this episodic reconstruction of English theological history is fascinating. I recommend "Fires of Faith" not only to Christians, but to Anglophiles reviewing a painful but historically significant piece of English history.
