5.0 out of 5 stars A book worth any price., January 26, 1999
By A Customer
I am a very avid reader with an extensive collection of science fiction's elite. The Fires of Nuala is one of my favorites and I do not bestow such praise lightly. After reading my mother's well-loved copy, I had to secure my own. This book was worth every hour of scouring used bookstores and waiting for out-of-print search results. When I did manage to find a copy, the first thing I did was read it again. I am ever amazed at the revelations I find each time I pick it up. The Fires of Nuala is science fiction at it's finest. Set in the distant but not-so-alien future, The Fires of Nuala is a study on human nature. Katharine Eliska Kimbriel creates a world with obstacles to life itself - intense radiation that mutates the inhabitants and warring families that control Nuala's unending wealth. Such wealth attracts many types of people, especially those that do not always stay within legal limits. Darame is one of these "freetraders" who journey to many worlds to fleece the unknowing locals. While it could be easy to dismiss a character with no morals at all, Darame lives by a code of conduct that is relatively foreign to people in her line of work, and she refuses to abandon her ethics, even for profit. This code is ultimately her key to survival when Nuala is torn apart by a ring of off-worlders bent on gaining infinite wealth by murdering the world's ruling families, most notably the Atare line. Keen wits and unique beauty offer Darame a chance to find love, family, and a home by aiding the powerful healer Sheel Atare in solving the conspiracy behind the murders. The Fires of Nuala is science fiction, mystery, and romance with intelligence and class. It is very easy to get drawn into the world of Nuala and the beauty and danger that surround it. The depth of the character development and quick-moving but thorough plot add the literary necessities to a wonderful story about finding your heart's desire.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this series------, December 17, 2001
Yes, this is just one of a series written about this world and I love them all. I kept waiting and waiting for more. Her female protaganists were efficient and honorable but not masculine or male bashers. Lovely. Katherine has not written a new book in awhile. Please get busy. I am thirsty!

5.0 out of 5 stars can i have some more please?, December 22, 2004

I greatly enjoyed this series not just this book. Her depth and understanding of human nature and social politics really shines through. I had to read one right after the other... I devoured the series and felt bad when I realized there was no more to eat!

She may not like the comparison but these to me this series is a strange and beautiful blending in my head of Dune and Andre Norton.

Now we just need to see more work from her again!
