Product Description

The Firestone Audio GreenKey is a USB Isolator and is designed to solve electrical noise problems coming through a USB connection of a computer that can influence the audio signal. The most important part of digital audio is the clarity of the data travelling along the USB cable. Since the very beginning of PC based audio, the noise from the power lines has effected the data integrity creating problems with the timing of the digital signal, known as jitter. With the growing popularity of digital music, jitter has become the primary source of "digititus" and the GreenKey will help reduce that interference substantially by isolating the power from the connection to the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) that are found in all computers. The GreenKey works Plug and Play with any Mac, Windows PC and Linux PC. There are two other Firestone Audio Keys in the series and each does something different. The BlackKey is a USB headphone DAC. The RedKey is Firestone Audio's most compact 24Bit USB to S/PDIF Converter.

Well I picked one of these up after reading about it on Computer Audiophile.

I disconnected my Audiolab MDAC and inserted the GreenKey in its place then connected the MDAC to the GreenKey.
Prior to installing I could hear some noise, like a low hum, when I turned the volume up on my amp. Now it is quieter. Hear for yourself:

GreenKey Disconnected
coldbusted dotty org/Isolator_Disconnected dotty wav

GreenKey Connected
coldbusted dotty org/Isolator_Connected dotty wav

Basically what I did was run a cord from the headphone jack out of the amp to a recorder. I turned the volume to the max, reason for hiss, but wanted to hear what this thing is actually doing.

Truth is I really didn't notice the noise in the first place when playing at normal levels but it does seem to be doing something so I am keeping it.

Also, this is not a DAC as mentioned. From the manufacturer:
The Firestone Audio GreenKey is a USB Isolator and is designed to solve electrical noise problems, coming through a USB connection of a computer that can influence the audio signal.

Bought this to try to clean up the power in my car used to charge my cell phone - playing music while also charging the phone adds annoying noise to the music.

It didn't work - while the noise went away, so did the charging. My cell phone *said* it was charging, but 10 minutes later it still had the same battery % for charge (I timed the 10 minutes). Hook the cell phone up directly to the usb charger I usually use, in 10 minutes the charge goes up 2-3% (I tried this a couple of times, and timed it each time).

The alternative is the much less expensive "PAC Ground Loop Isolator for 3.5 MM Applications" - I was trying this out to try to avoid altering the sound coming out of the phone. But it just doesn't work, at least it didn't work for my cell phone. Also tried using from my computer, but got the same result - phone says it's charging but never actually gains charge. (Whereas no problem when using the usb cable directly).

Edit: Someone commented to say that (though I couldn't find this when I looked at their description on their site) that the Firestone site says this:

"The greenkey will not cut off USB voltage 5VDC, but however will limit the current draw.
As result, the GreenKey can only be used with USB equipment that has it's own external powersupply."
