It's always interesting to read the blurbs on the front of a book. You know the ones I mean; the recommendations from fellow authors about why you should pick up a copy of the book in question. What's even more interesting is when the blurb comes from someone other than an author. In the case of FIRESTORM, the first in The Caretaker Trilogy by author David Klass, the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Firestorm may not be appropriate for middle school.
Just a "heads-up" for middle school folks who select books. The main character is in a car with his girlfriend & tries to convince her that "this is the night." The girlfriend says "you want me to spread my legs like football goalposts? Is that it?" "Put it away. Back in your pants." "Put that sucker away and let's go home. There'll be lots of better times. I promise. Soon." "Have you every heard of blue balls? It's a medical condition. Can be terminal."

This is a great story! Consider it for high school kids. But if you live in a community that is a bit conservative, Firestorm is best selected for the high school level.

It's always interesting to read the blurbs on the front of a book. You know the ones I mean; the recommendations from fellow authors about why you should pick up a copy of the book in question. What's even more interesting is when the blurb comes from someone other than an author. In the case of FIRESTORM, the first in The Caretaker Trilogy by author David Klass, the recommendation comes from Greenpeace. Yes, the same Greenpeace International that is dedicated to protecting and saving the Earth from the harmful practices that threaten to destroy it. If that isn't enough to get your attention, then maybe you should turn your ear towards Jack Danielson, the hero of FIRESTORM:

"Name's Jack Danielson. Eighteen. As of right now, not quite sure I'll live to see nineteen. Always been a pretty good guy, easy-going, laid back, friend to all and enemy to none. Smart, but not too smart. Athletically inclined, but never enough to be the best. Now my whole world is falling apart. Seems my father isn't my father. My mother isn't my mother. The fact that my dad who isn't my dad shot off his own foot to prove his point should be strange enough. It isn't. There are weird bat-like creatures chasing me, and things called Gorms. I've somehow ended up on a motorcycle with a humongous mongrel dog named Gisco, who happens to be telepathic, riding in a sidecar. Now there's a woman named Eko kicking my a** on a daily basis to make me stronger. Why? Because I have to find Firestorm so that I can save the Earth. And no, I have no idea what that is. And yes, I'm a fan of sentence fragments. Look it up, my friend, but not right now. Right now I have to

save the world, before there's no future on Earth for me to come back from."

FIRESTORM is Jack's story, but it's also the story of what could very well happen. It's a fantasy that could be truth, if the destruction of Earth by mankind continues on its current course. After reading this wonderful book, I clearly understand why it's endorsed by Greenpeace. One of the best things of the book, besides its underlying message of taking care of the planet, is Gisco, the telepathic dog. He adds an element of humor, such as his devotion to the O Great Dog God, that lightens up a story that could come across as preachy, but never does. It's very hard to categorize FIRESTORM into one category, but if I had to I would call it a coming-of-age, contemporary fantasy, science-fiction, paranormal adventure story.

If that doesn't catch your attention, I don't know what will. Let me just say that once you start reading, you won't be able to stop. And when you're finished, you'll want to read more. FIRESTORM is, luckily, the first book in The Caretaker Trilogy, so maybe if we hound Mr. Klass night and day he'll give us what we want--and sooner rather than later.

I bought this for a girl who doesn't read as often as she should and she couldn't put it down. She has already asked me about the next book in the trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for all, something Amazing., July 4, 2010
By
JD "Jd" (Silicon valley, USA) - See all my reviews
I first heard this book with the unabridged series, and was amazed.

I then read it just for kicks, and read it a least 4 or 5 times so far.

The main story-line is a 17 year old boy, with parents who want him to try and be normal, and not stand out or attract attention. One night, he is pursued by demon-like creatures, and must flee with two gifts from his father, a boat, and a watch.

He makes a friend along the way, an amazingly funny telepathic dog, Gisco, who may an noy him sometimes, but keeps him company at others. Later onto the story, after meeting multiple people and conflicts alike.

Eko is amazing to him, and tells him about the future world\, where his parents are. I loved this book, and cried at the end, whether from joy or grief, I know yet not. Read it to find out what you think of the ending, and whether it makes you cry, like it did for me, or make you salute gisco, and day, good job old bean.

3.0 out of 5 stars My Review: Firestorm, July 9, 2009
This book was good, but I believe it could've been better. The way the character tells the story in mostly sentence fragments, was a way it made you want to continue on with the story. Overall it was entertaining, a very fast, and easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new kind of superhero!, June 14, 2007

(REAL NAME)
I just finished "Firestorm: Book 1 of the Caretaker Trilogy" by David Klass and have a lot to say about it. It was like reading a movie (not a script, but an actual movie), but in a good way. If this book is not made into a movie I will eat my shorts. It has action from the beginning to the end, there are no lagging parts. It seems like a cross between Superman, Men in Black & Wizard of Oz, yet oddly its own unique story with messages about taking care of Earth before it is too late, but does not do it in a preachy way.

Jack, the all-American senior running back discovers that his entire existence has been a cover up for who or what he really is. He looses his family and everything he knows and discovers new friends in a large telepathic dog and hot shape shifting ninja girl. His new friends are willing to give up their lives if necessary to protect him because he is "the beacon of hope", to save the world.

The sentence structure was a bit distracting at first. I found it a bit annoying to read until I got used to it and found the poetic flow and rhythm of the writing. It was quit clever to write in poetic style yet in a paragraph narrative format. This would be a great book for teaching on many levels both the content and the writing form.

The way the story ends leaves you hanging (even though it wraps up) and waiting anxiously for the next installment. I will definitely purchase the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars David Klass's Firestorm - A Great Read, December 26, 2006
By
I have read several of David's earlier books and sceenplays over the years , and have found the first book of the Caretaker Trilogy "Firestorm" to be a great read, for adults and youngsters. The writing is fast paced and will capture the interest of the reader from the first page to the last. It seems to be a short book when you finish, but then you realize what has been covered and just how many pages you went through. And what an enjoyable time you just had, and what lessons were learned about our fragile environment.I am sure that the next two will be equally as impressive. Keep it up, Dave.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine introductory story of change., December 10, 2006
David Klass' FIRESTORM is Book 1 in the 'Caretaker Trilogy' and tells of a boy who breaks a high school record, gets in the news - and finds himself on a strange journey through space and time as a result of his talents and heritage. Jack lives in a dangerous world which is dying, and his powers may be the only thing standing between survival and disaster in this fine introductory story of change.
