Vary Carmichael had been enjoying her travels through Europe when she decided to stay at her cousin Jeff's holiday cottage in France for a while to relax from sightseeing. When she arrives, she sees that there is someone else there--but instead of Jeff, it is a man she has never seen before, a man who insists that she is the intruder, not the other way around. Jeff is mysteriously not answering his phone back in England, and Vary cannot find another way to convince the man that she is really Jeff's cousin. The man responds by watching Vary's every move, and insisting that she stay until they can contact Jeff. Vary is filled with a torrent of emotions, from fear for her life to the need to protect the cottage for Jeff, and, to her dismay, intense desire for this handsome stranger. Baker's novel, though predictable, is a pleasantly diverting read, perfect for a warm-up during the cold winter months.
