About the Author

Kathy O'Connell is a certified rehabilitation counselor and licensed mental health counselor, specializing in personal growth and transformation for people with disabilities. Kathy is director of Radiant Abilities, which provides an array of counseling and consulting services. She believes that within each of us is the full potential to lead the lives we dream of, ones full of happiness, love, health, and peace. Kathy teaches the concept of "different abilities" meaning that each of us has our own unique strengths and gifts to share with the world, regardless of ability level. She believes and teaches that a disability can be a launching pad for transforming one's life. When a person embraces a disability, both the challenges and the triumphs, life takes on new meaning, and one becomes empowered to make choices, pursue dreams, radiate abilities, and live fully. Firewalk: Embracing Different Abilities offers invaluable tools for parents and teachers of children with disabilities, as well as new ideas for therapists and healthcare workers who work with clients and patients with different abilities.

I picked up this book because I hoped it would inform my understanding of diversity as a clinical psychologist. I am recommending this book to all because I found O'Connell's meditation on "disability" to be both a challenging and inspiring read that is relevant to everyone. Whether she is recounting personal anecdotes with a raw honesty or moving into the philosophical and spiritual realms, she has a strong command of her writing that prevents the material from ever seeming dry or preachy. The message I took from "Firewalk" is that the pervasive belief that only fully able people are worthwhile, productive, and beautiful is actually a societal myth and detrimentally undermines the humanity of valuable individuals and thus a negative impact on society. Ultimately, it is not just about those with noticeable ability differences from the norm, but about all human diversity. It is a compelling argument that is one many of us have heard before (and most of us know deep down), but one that has rarely been so powerfully and directly delivered to the reader. I cannot recommend this book more highly!
