This review is from: Fireweed (Hardcover)
Fireweed is a coming of age story in WWII London. Two teenagers learn about self-reliance and responsibilities as they survive on their own during the bombing of London.Ms. Walsh captures the angst, selfishness, and drama of the young having to cope with a world that is suddenly changed forever, as well as the resilience and ingenuity that came with suddenly having to take care of themselves and eachother in a time when life continued on as bombs falling at any time became almost commonplace. I read this book first as a pre-teen. It has haunted me for years and is still touching now reading it again at 32.

Two teen adrift in wartorn London,
This review is from: Fireweed (Paperback)
Superb story of two teens, a boy and a girl, adrift in London during the blitz. Both have slipped away from their evacuation destinations and want to remain free of adult plans for their futures. Simple, eloquent, elegant prose describes the purpose and pattern of their days as they build their immensely satisfying private world during a time of national chaos and daily danger. Themes of friendship, responsibility, work, and comraderie prevail. Very very special.

Fireweed is written by Jill Patton Walsh. Fireweed is a book about romance, you should read this One! Now! This book is written by a first person point of view. Fireweed is about these two kids named Bill and Julie that both of them ran way from their parents and they met each other on the train station and they went out to eat, but there was a war taking place and Julie got hurt. What do you think happened next? Try and finding out , Reading this book was very easy for me because a lot of kids run away from home and desperately parents don't know which way to find them. What I did like about this book was that the story it was nice and one thing I didn't like was they said in chapter three and they start telling the beginning. My opinion about the book was that there was too much love it was kind of annoying and how they met each other and that was boring so only because I say I didn't like it that doesn't mean that you don't like it and if it is interesting to you go ahead and read it. ENJOY!

Although I loved "The Emperor's Winding Sheet" by the same author, this book left me a little cold. The attitudes of the teen boy did not seem like angst, (as another reviewer mentioned) but rather peevish, disrespectful, and out of sync with the times. I often had the impression that his viewpoint was that of a bitter full-fledged adult instead of a 15 year old. I will admit to having not finished the book. Perhaps if I could have got all the way to the end I might have cried like another reviewer did. But again, I put it aside because of the off-putting tone. This may have been a good Young Adult book if the author had taken a different approach. On the plus side, the detail included about the blitz and living conditions in London was very well done!! A child with a WWII passion could easily enjoy the book from this aspect.

Hard time in London,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Fireweed (Paperback)
The book Fireweed was about a boy that said his name was Bill (but that really wasn't his name) and a girl named Julia Vernon-Greene. They had both ran away from their families and went to London. This had taking place in London during the 1940s while London had been being bombed and there had been toppling buildings, air-raid wardens, and rescue squads. It was an ok book, but it wasn't interesting enough. I didn't think it was that great because it didn't have enough action going on and the ending just left me hanging and I didn't like that. Another thing that I didn't like was that there wasn't really a problem and the little problem they did have wasn't solved totally, so it confused me in the end. I liked that the story had a nice plot and moved along, but it just wasn't that interesting. Also, I liked that it was a quick read.

Fireweed was a very good book. It is filled with excitement and danger. Fireweed is about a boy named Bill and a girl named Julie. They meet eachother in a refugee camp that they are staying in. Both of them had previously ran away from foster homes they were sent to because of the war. When they met in the camp Bill introduced himself to her and she ran away from him. He chased after her and when she finally talked to him she realized he wasn't trying to cause trouble they started to hang out. If you enjoy books with a lot of action and drama this will be a good book for you

When they met in the camp Bill introduced him to her and she ran away from him. He chased after her and when she finally talked to him she realized he wasn't trying to cause trouble they started to hang out. Both of them had previously run away from foster homes they were sent to because of the war. Bill was sent because his dad left for the war and his aunt made him go. But his dad said he did not have to but when he left so did bill. When bill first ran away he went home and a bomb had dropped but it did not go off. Know he sees how much everybody has changed. Well why Julie ran away is because when she was on a ship to Canada it got hit by a torpedo. All the children got sent back to the port on a different ship. She ran away because all the other kids' parents picked them up and sent them out a different time but her parents did not because they did not want to go through it again. Know them to be living together in one of the shelters. Bill and Julie are in bill old house getting some stuff from bills room. There was a bomb in his house that they thought was a dud but after they left it went off and wrecked the house. Well know bill is doing jobs for money to support them. Know both of them live in a have wrecked house in the basement. Bill is having hard time finding any jobs to buy food. The two kids are starting to get settled in there new home. One of the most boring books I've ever read!,
By Sarah Bearah "Curie Student" (Chicago) - See all my reviews

Do you like a book that everything good happens at the end of the book? Well, if you do this is the book for you. Fireweed is about a two young teens named Julia and Bill who both run away from home. While they're gone, they meet each other and they fall in love. They learn to live life together. This book's setting is in the early 1940's during the war.I think Fireweed is an okay book. I feel it could have been a lot better. I think you should read this book if you are kind of bored and have nothing else to do. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read books from old times. To me it was not a good book. What makes me not interested in this book is the fact that it happened in old times and I'm not really attracted to books like this. This is how I feel about the book Fireweed.

I didn't like the book fireweed because it wasn't very interesting. The book also didn't have a lot of suspenseful events. The book, Fireweed, was about a boy that had problems at home with his aunt, he runs away from his house and he was sent to London. In London the buildings were falling and the streets were bad because London was bombed, in London he meets a girl on the street, she also ran away from home. She asks him if he has money because she was hungry. He didn't have any money so the girl took him to a diner. They had to hold hands so people could think that they were brother and sister. She had enough money for bacon and eggs. There was a war during the time. The boy was sad because he wanted to get his fathers address from his aunt before he left but she wouldn't give it to him. He wanted his fathers address so he could write to him. The boy and the girl were talking about there life's and how they ended up in London. I didn't like reading the book because it was pretty boring and I couldn't really understand what they were talking about. I think that this book is for people that like to read about love stories.
