Editorial Reviews

When Dave Chandler of Saint Vitus penned the doom anthem "Born Too Late", he could hardly guess at just how accurately this prophecy would come true, and how the embodiment of that sentiment would be birthed in the Swedish city of Orebro nearly two decades later, with the alchemical creation of WITCHCRAFT.. Despite his tender age, Witchcraft mastermind, Magnus Pelander has been an active member of the Swedish Doom scene for some time now, and initially started the band as a tribute to former 13th Floor Elevators legend Roky Erickson and vintage Doom rocker Bobby Liebling of cult legends Pentagram. In early 2003 the band, now completed by Jonas Arnes‚n - Drums, John Hoyles Guitar & Ola Henriksson Bass, began assembling vintage 60's & 70's recording equipment in a basement and started work, with producer Jens Henriksson, on their debut album. That album, 'Witchcraft', was instantly hailed as a classic by the international Rock press and quickly taken to the hearts of music fans everywhere. Opting for a clean, heavy sound quite unlike any other contemporary bands, the album swung effortlessly from orthodox doom to blues, folk and jazz whilst always remaining shrouded in the cloak of influence from some of the more obscure moments of the 70's cult rock underground. So, again enlisting the help of producer Jens Henriksson the band traveled to the pastoral English countryside in early 2005 to work on their follow up "Firewood". This time around, the overall feel of the record is brighter and fuller, but with a prevailing sense of melancholy which permeates the strident, heavy anthemic tracks like "If Wishes Were Horses" and "Wooden Cross (I Can't Wake The Dead)" and the more reflective, epic opuses "I See A Man" and "Sorrow Evoker". Whilst their self titled album made a sizeable dent in the minds of the doom cult fanatics, this new slab will go a long way to establishing them beyond the narrow parameters of the underground to fertile pastures anew. Rise Above. 2006 --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a surprise!!!, December 22, 2005
This review is from: Firewood (Audio CD)
I really didn't expect too much from this. The guys look like second hand HIM clones and the label Candlelight, though usually good, is pretty much a black metal label. What a surprise when I put this on! It seemed the Sabbath was reborn! Crunchy, buzzing guitar and bass with lyrics about the devil and suffering...but not "evil". If you're a fan of Sabbath (you'd better be!) check out the samples of this and be blown away. Personal favorites: If Wishes Were Horses and Queen Of Bees.

Their debut last year was made from their demos- the back cover credits even say "Recorded in a basement"! For their second album Witchcraft hired a "real" producer. Now we know what they really sound like. "Firewood" sounds like a Jazzier version of early 70s Doom Rock (not so much Sabbath as BANG) with Neil Young on vocals. Neil Young with a Scandanavian accent! And, much like their s/t debut, the occasional use of flute (and here accoustic guitar) shows their Tull influence. Along with Priest's "Angle of Retrobution", Bloody Mary's "Blood & Roll", and Wednesday 13's "Transilvania 90210" Witchcraft's "Firewood" is one of the best Metal CDs of 05. Hidden track: a cover of Pentagram's "when the screams come".

4.0 out of 5 stars Animals meet Sabbath meet Crowley, July 2, 2008
This review is from: Firewood (Audio CD)
This is a good album. I prefer the previous self-titled, and the third album "Alchemist", but this is the best stuff in the genre. This band has got loads of class.
This is the creepy european band you've been looking for.
I can't wait until their next album.
This album gets 4 stars, because the other two get 5!
They have a remarkable vintage sound that is very consistent.
This is a transition album, but the other two first, but this one won't let you down. Good song-writing.
Uberpagan.
