Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 6-12. Though monumental in repercussions, the firing on Fort Sumter might seem an inordinately narrow slice of history to warrant an entire book. But thanks to Colbert's ability to humanize the decisions leading to the fateful episode, the history comes alive. Sharp descriptions and plenty of well-selected photographs introduce the personalities and reveal the decisions by and miscommunications among the major players in the drama that led to the inevitable onset of the Civil War. Lincoln, Buchanan, and others involved are vividly presented; often they are shown facing private moral struggles in the midst of the social turmoil tearing the country apart. Both Union and Rebel sympathizers come across as complex and honorable stewards of their cause. Glossary; bibliography. Roger Leslie
